Dorothy Anne Mentzer

Dorothy Anne Mentzer of Havre de Grace, Maryland, passed away Tuesday, October 27 at her home surrounded by loved ones.  She was 80 years old.

Dorothy was born in Wilmington, Delaware to the late James Francis Jones and Ruth (Timms) Jones on September 29, 1929.  Her family moved to Havre de Grace in 1932.  Upon graduating from Havre de Grace High School in 1946, Dorothy held clerical positions at the Bainbridge Naval Training Station and later at Aberdeen Proving Ground.  On June 9, 1949, Dorothy married her high school sweetheart and next door neighbor John Noble Mentzer.  Dorothy continued to work until the mid 1950’s when she became a full time homemaker and devoted mother.  Dorothy later returned to work part time for the Baltimore Life Insurance Company and lastly the J. Lawson Gilbert Company.  In the following years, Dorothy and Noble enjoyed many vacations on the East Coast from the Florida Keys to Brunswick, Canada.  As a life long member of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, Dorothy participated on several committees.  Dorothy enjoyed needlepoint, knitting and crocheting creating many sweaters and afghans for the family and friends.  Dorothy also enjoyed donating her handmade items to charitable organizations.

Dorothy is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years John Noble Mentzer; son Mark Mentzer and his wife Jacqueline  of Havre de Grace, MD; daughter Eileen Smith and her husband Ronald of Bel Air, MD; and brother Robert Jones of Havre de Grace, MD.  Dorothy was a devoted and loving grandmother of Christopher Mentzer and his wife Renee of Havre de Grace, MD; Keri Cargo and her husband Brian of Aberdeen, MD; Emily Smith and Adam Smith both of Bel Air, MD; and great grandchildren Caleb Richardson-Cargo, Kenny and Tommy Cargo, Hailey, Delaney, Kinsey and Matilyn Mentzer.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, from 2 to 5 PM at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD 21078. 

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, November 1, at 2 PM, at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A... 

Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ray Roberson of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church and Rev. Edward Heydt, with interment at the Angel Hill Cemetery in Havre de Grace, MD.  Pallbearers will be Mark Mentzer, Ronald Smith, Christopher Mentzer, Brian Cargo, Dave Mentzer and Jack Hitchens.

 In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, 101 S. Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD or Gilchrest Hospice Care, 11311 McCormick Road, Suite 300, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.
