Obituary for Dr. Alonso Gomez

Dr. Alonso Gomez, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on October 2, 2022, at the age of 85

Dr. Gomez was born in San Gil, Santander, Colombia, to Dr. Ramiro Gomez and Maria Delia Uribe de Gomez. He is survived by his wife Esperanza Gomez and his daughters Kellie Gomez Moran, Michelle Gomez Brooks (Mitchell), and Patricia Gomez Garcia. He was the adored grandfather (Abu) of Marissa Moran (Marcus Wilson), Lucy Brooks, Emily Brooks, Katy Brooks, Natalia Garcia, and Tito Garcia, the great-grandfather of Maeve Wilson, father figure to Chip Reier, and brother of Yolanda Gomez (Cherry Koontz). In addition, he was loved by many other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Dr. Gomez studied medicine at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia and began his pediatric residency at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD. In his 50+ year career as a devoted and well-respected pediatrician, Dr. Gomez loved working with his office staff and colleagues at Havre de Grace Pediatrics and Bel Air Pediatrics, treating thousands of patients, and his time spent at Harford Memorial Hospital, especially his lunches prepared by the staff at the cafeteria. He enjoyed travelling to new countries, medical missions, pictures with children worldwide, being proud of his three girls and the legacy of La Playa. “Doc” had a zest for plain black coffee, steamed crabs and good food, great Cabernet Sauvignon and priceless moments with family and friends. Alonso was well loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2022, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will be private.
