Obituary for Francisco Esparraguera

Francisco (Frank) Esparraguera, M.D.

Francisco (Frank) Esparraguera, M.D. Died of subdural hematoma on April 25, 2011 while residing in Havre de Grace, MD. Born in Bilbao, Spain in 1926. He attended elementary school in Bilbao and moved from Bilbao to Madrid in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War. He attended high school, college and the University of San Carlos medical school in Madrid. In 1952, he came to the United States, where he took post-graduate studies. He interned at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, spending one year in a pathology residency and a second year in a urology residency. He also had a year of residency in Akron Ohio and later worked at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. It was in Pittsburgh that he met Dolores Landolt, who was completing her residency in pediatrics at West Penn Hospital. They married in 1954 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

After completing his American Medical Qualification for Foreign Graduates examination, he opened a urology practice in Oil City and Franklin Pennsylvania in 1960. His wife, Dolores, also opened her practice in pediatrics and they worked together until her retirement in 1989. In 1999, he retired and closed the practice.

Dr. Esparraguera fluently spoke many languages, including Spanish, Euskara (the Basque language), German, French, Italian and Portuguese, in addition to English. He traveled the world, visiting all five continents, including the Arctic and Antarctica, and all countries in Europe. An avid skier, he skied the Austrian Alps, Colorado, Utah, Lake Placid, Vermont, California and Nevada. He was also an enthusiastic cyclist, often riding the Justus Recreational trail along the Allegheny River. Always maintaining a great appreciation for art, he painted in oils and was skilled in photography.

Those who worked with him at the hospitals in Oil City and Franklin will recall his vibrancy and zest for life. He often spontaneously danced as he entered a hospital wing and would tell colorful stories of his travels and adventures. His intelligence, charisma and sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him. He was a loving father and husband, well-respected by his peers and much-appreciated by his patients, who sometimes paid him in fresh venison.

He was predeceased by his mother, Juanita Lopez de Greñu and his father, Mariano Esparraguera, and one brother, Carmello. He is survived by his wife, Dolores Landolt, and daughter, Maria Esparraguera, of Havre de Grace, MD. Dolores Landolt recently moved from Oil City, PA and Maria Esparraguera recently moved from Sea Girt, NJ. He also had two grandchildren, Kevin and Luke Nixon.
