Obituary for Gene Clinton Holcomb

Gene C. Holcomb, 95, of Churchville, MD, passed away on March 19, 2024, at home. Born in Aberdeen, MD, on December 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Grimes M. Holcomb, Sr. and Maude E. (Simmons) Holcomb. He is survived by his brother, Grimes M. Holcomb, Jr. He was predeceased by siblings W. Lee Holcomb, Glenn M. Holcomb, Sr., and Ellen A. Smith.

He was the beloved husband of the late Charlotte Virginia (Ervin) Holcomb. They were married for 68 years. He was the beloved father of Gayle Holcomb of Perry Hall, Cheryl Swehla (Robert) of Havre de Grace, and Lisa Holcomb of Belcamp. He was the adored “Pop” of Dr. Brian Swehla (Kristan) of Hydes, Rebecca Hendrich (Russell) of Easley, SC, Sarah Swehla of Pittsburgh, PA, Amanda Lee (Paul) of San Diego, CA, and Susan McCracken (Philip) of Bel Air. He was the loved “Pop Pop” of Lily, Owen, and Olivia Swehla, Nicholas and Zachary Hendrich, and Evelyn, Audrey, and Isabel Lee.


After his family, Gene loved all things automotive. He was a mechanic, a race car driver, and a teacher. He began his auto mechanic career at his father's garage, Harford Nash Sales, later Harford Motors in Carsins Run. During the 40s and 50s, in his spare time, he built and raced cars. In the 60s, he earned a teaching certificate and taught auto mechanics at the newly opened Harford Vocational Technical School, now Harford Technical High School. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in Education in 1977. He taught for 25 years, and he enjoyed following his former students' careers.

Gene also served his country in the Maryland Army National Guard. He retired after 36 years of service as a Sergeant First Class.

In his retirement, Gene enjoyed part-time employment, reading, watching auto racing, Oak Grove Baptist Church bus trips with his wife, and spending time with his family. He, especially, enjoyed attending his grandchildren's events and hearing stories about his great-grandchildren. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD, where a funeral service will be held at 12 PM. Funeral services will be Livestreamed via Facebook @ZellmanFuneralHome, P.A., or on Mr. Holcomb’s tribute page, click view photos/videos, click view webcast. Interment will be at Harford Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, MD.
