Obituary for George Douglas "Sonny" Pope Jr.

Mr. George Douglas “Sonny” Pope Jr. 79, formerly of Welch, West Virginia, transitioned this life on Saturday April 6, 2024.

Born December 13, 1944, he was the son of the late George Douglas and Ruth Othelia Smith Pope.
George attended Court Street United Methodist Church and attended Welch Dumbar Junior High and Kimball Senior High Schools.

Upon graduating, George enlisted in the United States Army where he served in Korea and upon his discharge, he made his home in Havre De Grace, MD.

He was a devoted husband of 40 years to Saundra Marie Pope.

George worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground as a mechanic and had his own shop. He was passionate about working on vehicles and fond of his truck, “Old Red”. George was passionate about NASCAR, loved to watch races, and the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auctions. He was an avid gunman who loved spending time at the shooting range and was a certified sharpshooter and member of the NRA.

At the time of his death he was employed by the Hartford County Public Library.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by an infant brother, Charles Pope, brother Larry Pope, sister Mary Elizabeth Pope, Godmother Rosalia Juanita Kendall, nephew Steven Boothe, and mother in law Ruth E. Kenny.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife Saundra M. Pope of Havre de Grace, sisters Ruth P. Hairston (Michael) of Havaco, WV, Ida L. Pope of Willow Springs, NC, Pamala “Pat” Robinson of Charleston, WV, his nieces Missy Hairston of Los Angeles, CA, Candance Harrington of Charlotte, NC, Cydni Robinson and Cailena Robinson both of Cross Lanes, WV, and Ximora Hairston of Fairburn, GA. Nephews Stanley Robinson of Charlotte NC, James Robinson of Cross Lanes, WV, Michael G. Hairston Jr., Michael G. Hairston III and Charles Clay Hairston, all of Fairburn GA, Emil Robinson of Cross Lanes, WV, a brother-in-law, Michael Nebus of SC, and sister-in-law Terri Wallace (Greg) of Newark.

A viewing will be held on Saturday April 13th from 11am until 12pm at Zellman Funeral Home 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace and funeral services will begin at noon. Services will also be Live-streamed via Facebook @ ZellmanFuneralHomeP.A., or on his webpage ; click photos/videos, click view webcast. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 1pm, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 6605 New Hope Road, Bluefield, WV 24701
