Obituary for George Franklin Twombly

George Franklin Twombly, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on April 11, 2021. He was 79.

Mr. Twombly was born in Havre de Grace, MD, to Charles Pickard Twombly and Rose Julia Hughes Twombly. Mr. Twombly was the devoted husband of 58 years to Nola Louise Twombly, loving father of Wanda Twombly Sampson (Jimbo), Jean Williams (John), and Steven Twombly (Sandy), grandfather of Greg Sampson (Ginger), Nathan Sampson (Heather), Crystal Ayers (Ryan), Amanda Bent (Jason), Becci Lay, Joshua Bowman (Kayla), Ashley Clark (Dan), and Autumn Twombly, and great-grandfather of Ethan, Grace, and Jacob Sampson and Ivy Lay. Mr. Twombly was the brother of John Twombly (Lyn), Dorothy Canapp (Jack) and the late Roberta Leonard. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Charles “Snaps” Leonard.

Mr. Twombly was a 1960 graduate of Havre de Grace High School. He retired from Amtrak in 2002, after 35 years of service. Mr. Twombly was a Life Member of 56 years of Susquehanna Hose Company, serving as a Captain in 1970, Board of Directors, and House Committee Chairman for several years. He attended the Maryland State Firemen’s Convention for 50 straight years and was inducted to the Harford-Cecil Austin D. Amoss Hall of Fame for the fire service. Mr. Twombly was also a Life Member of First Christian Church, Young at Heart, serving as president for 3 years, and the Son’s of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling and traveled on all of Amtrak’s routes. He also enjoyed taking cruises and taking his grandchildren to New York City every year for Christmas. Mr. Twombly loved playing cards and was an avid Ravens and Orioles Fan. He and his wife attended the first Maryland Lottery Ball.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2021, from 11 Am until 1 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will begin at 1 PM, at the funeral home. They will also be Livestreamed via Facebook @ Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., or on his obituary page via the funeral home website. Interment will be held at Tabernacle Cemetery.
