Obituary for Jerry I. Ashby
Jerry I. Ashby
Jerry I. Ashby of Havre de Grace, MD passed away on May 10, 2011 at his home from complications of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder. He was 65.
Mr. Ashby was born in Western Maryland to the late Artie Dale Ashby, Sr. and Mary (Friend) Campbell. He is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Gwendolyn “Dee” Ashby.
He was the loving father to Jerry L. Ashby, Sr. and his wife Teresa, Pamela C. Coyle and her husband Will, and Sarah E. Ashby. He was the grandfather to Jessica Smyth, Jerry L. Ashby, Jr, and Austin and Dillon Coyle. He was predeceased by his grandson James I. Ashby. He was the great-grandfather of four; Emily and Elizabeth Smyth, Ronnie Fortney, III and Avery Ashby. He was the brother to Artie Dale Ashby, Jr, Catherine Preston, Judith Ann Tusing, and the late Peggy Johnson.
Mr. Ashby was a graduate of Havre de Grace High School, where he started the school’s first Track and Field team and excelled in the high jump. He received his Associates Degree from Harford Community College. He was a self-employed Master Plumber, who enjoyed frequenting either the Bridge Diner or Vancherie’s Restaurant every morning for breakfast. He had a passion for Math and Science, which he shared as a volunteer tutor and mentor for many students at Havre de Grace Elementary School, taking special interest in encouraging children to learn. He loved Havre de Grace and was a generous friend to many.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 11 A.M. at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A. Pallbearers will be Jerry L. Ashby, Sr., Jerry L. Ashby, Jr., David Nevins, David Mullins, Randy Williams, and John Marking. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tim White and Carroll Baker.
An interment will be held at Angel Hill Cemetery, Havre de Grace, MD.
Officiating services will be conducted by Pastor Lona Smith.
