Obituary for Mary Faith Callahan (Henon)

Mary Faith Henon Callahan, of Havre de Grace, MD, formerly a long time resident of Wynnewood, PA, passed away peacefully, at home, her daughter Pam by her side, on February 19, 2021 at the age of 99.

Born November 10, 1921, Mary Faith lived near Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, before her family moved to Torresdale where they had a home on the Delaware River. She liked sharing stories about the many wonderful childhood memories she had from their summer home in Cape May, NJ.

Mary Faith attended Notre Dame Rittenhouse Square, Sacred Heart Eden Hall, graduated from the Academy of the Assumption at Ravenhill, where she boarded for many years, and Pierce Junior College.

Upon finishing at Pierce, she began working at her father’s architectural firm, where she met her husband Ed on the elevator. To hear Ed tell the story, he knew then and there that was the gal he wanted to marry. Mary Faith took a little more time to agree to that decision.

Ed and Mary Faith were married for 53 years, raising their four children in the Penn Wynne and Carroll Park areas of Wynnewood, PA. They loved to travel together visiting Europe several times, Hawaii, cruises to the Caribbean islands, and many trips to the beach. They enjoyed playing golf and going out for a meal – whether it be downtown to lively South Street or the local pub. Family gatherings were a way of life with the Callahans and the annual Christmas Eve party they threw for family and friends was legendary.

A couple of years after the passing of her husband, Mary Faith, and her sister Rita, moved to Maryland to live with her daughter Pamela. She immediately felt at home in Maryland, as her mother was a Baltimore native who attended the Peabody Institute of Music, and her parents met in Betterton. Mary Faith spent some of her childhood on her father’s boat in Havre de Grace, picking up a Charlotte Rousse on the way into town. A fond childhood memory for her was swimming off the boat in the Chesapeake in Havre de Grace. She thoroughly enjoyed her life in Havre de Grace, and could be seen everywhere around town, from the Bulle Rock pool to her favorite Amanda’s Florists, Joseph’s Department store, or Lyon’s and always with a visit to one of the town’s great restaurants. Age never took away her love of life.

Mary Faith loved swimming, even dipping into the ocean this past summer on her annual trip with Pam to Ocean City, NJ. She played golf for many years at Overbrook Golf Club, where she maintained her membership throughout her life. As a young person, she played tennis and loved her bicycle. She passed her love of sports onto all of her children, who are good swimmers and all love their bikes. As a 9 year old, she rowed herself across the Delaware River, of course, without her parents’ knowledge. She was spirited from a young age.

An avid reader, especially biographies and history, a movie buff (with a memory for every actor and actress – old or new), a long time dog owner and lover, and eventually a cat lover (Pam’s cat Molly hung on for 20 years, not wanting to leave Mom, faithfully sleeping with her every day) – her interests were varied.

She liked clothes – a lot – and she wore them well. Whether she was dressed fashionably going to a Broadway show in NYC or headed to the shore in her sporty beach attire, she always looked good. Her hair was styled weekly and make up done. The one time she allowed herself to look shabby, was when she was cleaning the house.

Above all, Mary Faith loved her family. There was a close bond between Mary Faith and her children. Having grown up near our grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and that closeness extended to beyond our immediate family. She was not only Mom, wife, and aunt, but friend, confidant, adviser, and an endless source of information and stories. Her zest for life and ability to adapt to life’s challenges has been inspiring.

Mary Faith was pre-deceased by her husband Edward F. Callahan, Jr., her parents Paul and Eva Jordan Henon, sisters Virginia (Bud) Cassidy and Rita Henon, brothers Jordan (Joan) Henon and Bentley (Queenie) Henon.

Mary Faith is survived by her children Edward F. III (Sandy), Pamela, Brian, and Mary Faith (Anne), granddaughter Noelle (Steve), great grandchildren Miles and Laila, by many loving nieces and nephews, dear friends who feel like family, and grand-dogs Rufus and Roxy who both visited often.

Although Mary Faith and Ed were longtime parishioners at Presentation B.V.M. church in Wynnewood, PA, her services will be held at her current home parish, St. Patrick’s. Services will be held at a later date when her extended family and friends may join together to celebrate her life. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken, PA

A special thank you to Michelle and the Amedisys hospice team who made Mary Faith’s last week at home not only possible, but comfortable too.
