Obituary for Milfred A. Bodt

Milfred A. Bodt, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on July 24, 2017. He was 94.
Mr. Bodt was born June 4, 1923 in Churchville, MD to Roland M. Bodt and Annellia (Nellie) Trago Bodt. He was the devoted husband of 67 years to the late Yvonne Atkinson Bodt. He is survived by his sons, Bernard L. Bodt of Montana, Rev. Dr. Brian R. Bodt and wife Carol Galloway of Connecticut and his sons Daniel and Adam Schofield-Bodt, Dr. Barry A. Bodt and wife Pamela Bodt of Fallston and their children Kyle and Skylar Bodt, and Barton E. Bodt and wife Mary F. Towers of Bel Air and his children Matthew (Alayna), Andrew, and Erica Bodt. Mr. Bodt was predeceased by his wife, Yvonne, and his sister, Margaret Belle (Bodt) Grace.
Mr. Bodt served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from1942-1945. He completed Sonar School and was head sonarman on the USS Barney. He was extremely proud to have never lost any ships under USS Barney escort. Subsequently, Mr. Bodt served as a Maryland State Trooper for five years, earning distinction of being second in his 1946 class at the police academy. Later, he became the Chief Naval Investigator at Bainbridge Naval Training Center in Cecil County, where he once earned a commendation from J. Edgar Hoover for his leadership in stopping an interstate commerce fraud operation. Mr. Bodt was a life member of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church and held several leadership positions, including 25 years as Chairman of the Property Committee. He was a member of the American Legion Post 47 and a 65-year member of the Susquehanna Masonic Lodge 130. He coached baseball for his children in their younger years and helped with projects with the Salvation Army. He enjoyed hunting in Maryland, Vermont and Montana, and boating and waterfowl hunting on the Susquehanna.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 28, 2017 from 5-8 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 10 AM, at Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, 101 South Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD. Interment will be held at Smith’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Churchville, MD.
