Obituary for Patricia J. Hathaway (Jackson)

Patricia J. Hathaway, of Denton, MD, formerly of Churchville, MD, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2022. She was 97 years old.

Mrs. Hathaway was born in Philadelphia, PA, to James Clement Jackson and Marion Isabel Jackson. She was the wife of the late Dr. Wilfred B. Hathaway, loving mother of Clement B. Hathaway (Evie E. Hathaway) of Denton, MD, Charlotte H. Colegrove (David L. Colegrove) of Whiteville, NC, and Elizabeth D. Hathaway (Graeme M. Ton, III) of Port Angeles, WA. She was the grandmother of Sherye H. Nickerson (Michael S. J. Nickerson) of Easton, MD, Ashley E. Hathaway (Cullen L. MacFarland) of Lochbuie, CO, Sarah C. Colegrove (Spencer A. Masiewicz) of Whiteville, NC, Jordan C. Ton of Port Angeles, WA, and great-grandmother of five (Aryn, Logan, Levi, Sam and Nate). Mrs. Hathaway was the sister of the late James Clement Jackson, Jr., of Havertown, PA. She is survived by her two sisters, Marion J. McCreary of West Brandywine, PA, and Dorothy J. Bass, of Hilton Head Island, SC.

Mrs. Hathaway graduated from Haverford Township Senior High School in 1943. She attended Drexel Institute of Technology and attained her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1947, and then attended Cornell University and received her Master’s Degree in 1950. During school she became a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Nu.

Mrs. Hathaway substitute taught at Towson State College in 1959, was an instructor for St. Agnes School of Nursing from 1962-63, a research technician at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1964-65, a laboratory technician and chemist at Harford Memorial Hospital from 1965-68, a research assistant at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 1968-85 and was a part time instructor at Harford Community College. She was a member of The Historical Society of Harford County, Inc., served on the Board of Directors, was first Vice-President, then President from 1992-1995, and was the editor of their newsletter from 1996-2010. She was also a docent at Hays House, Bel Air, MD for many years. Mrs. Hathaway was a member of the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, MD, sang in the choir and served as choir librarian from 1985-1997. She served on the Harford County Forest Conservancy District Board from 1995-2008; and as Secretary for The Route 22 Corridor Association, and was active with the Ecumenical Coalition, Deer Creek Watershed Association, Harford County Piano Teachers Association and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She was a member of The Nature Conservancy and The Smithsonian. She was also a reading volunteer for Churchville Elementary School from 1987-2003 and coordinator of the annual Arbor Day tree planting. She was a member of Churchville Presbyterian Church for many decades, served as Elder from 2000-2002 and served on the Outreach Committee in the 2000’s until 2010.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022, from 11 am until 12 pm, at Churchville Presbyterian Church, 2844 Churchville Road, Churchville, MD 21028. Funeral services will begin at 12 PM. Interment will be held at the church cemetery.
