Obituary for Virgil Ray Decker Jr.

Born on November 8, 1946, in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Virgil Ray Decker Jr. was a man of many talents and passions. He departed from this world on April 3, 2024, in his hometown of Havre de Grace, leaving a legacy of hard work and dedication.
Virgil, known to those closest to him as a loving husband of 47 years to Kathleen Decker. A farmer at heart, he had cows and chickens at one time in a barn that he converted years later into a huge workshop. He loved working outside, whether it was in his vegetable garden or keeping his yard neatly mowed. Virgil’s green thumb extended to his hobby of the numerous indoor plants that he cared for with love and expertise. In his love of outside activities, other hobbies included camping and fishing. Virgil retired from the City of Aberdeen after approximately 35 years of service as a supervisor for Public Works.
A skilled tradesman, Virgil was known for his handiness in various tasks. From rewiring his entire house to plumbing work and woodworking, there was no job too big or small for him to tackle. His passion for working outside in the yard was a testament to his hardworking nature and commitment to excellence.
Virgil will be fondly remembered by his nephews Jeffrey Doane, Duane Doane, Great Nephew Brett Doane and his loving and devoted pup “Larry”. He was predeceased by his parents: Virgil R. Decker Sr. and Marguerite M. Decker; Sister Betty Doane McGrady, and his niece Melissa Doane. His other beloved dogs that had passed were “Petey”, “Shelbie”, and “Toby”. He considered all his dogs as his children.

Services to commemorate Virgil's life will be held at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. His public viewing will take place on April 7, 2024, at 4:00 pm to 6 pm, followed by another viewing on April 8, 2024, at 9:00 am, with the funeral service at 10:00 am. Immediately following services, internment will be held at Bel Air Memorial Gardens.
