Walter W. Clifford Jr. passed away on August 19, 2021 in Havre de Grace, MD. Born in Pittsburgh, PA to Walter W. Clifford Sr. and Mary I. Clifford. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara, a son Steven(Chris)Clifford, a daughter Diane(Dave)Tomecek, two granddaughters Katie and Hannah Clifford and a brother William Clifford.
He grew up in the Pittsburgh area and began his career at Aberdeen Proving Ground( APG) after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962. He worked with the Department of Defense at Aberdeen Proving Ground as an analyst with the Army’s Ballistics Research Labs and then rose through the ranks of the US Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA) to a Defense Department Senior Executive leadership position in 1986 till the time of his retirement. His career was devoted to assuring the creation and fielding of the best performing equipment for our soldiers.
Mr. Clifford was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for nearly 60 years. He was involved in every aspect of the church life and served in many positions of the church leadership. He was instrumental in getting the FISH of Harford County program started in the 1970s in Aberdeen, Havre de Grace, Bel Air and Edgewood. He worked with this program throughout the years and delivered food to many needy families until the Spring of 2021.
Walter was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and uncle. He loved spending time with his family especially his granddaughters. He delighted in talking to people and made many friends. He was an active member of the Martha’s Meal food program in the community for nearly 20 years.
A Celebration of Life service will be held September 8th at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 201 Mt. Royal Ave. in Aberdeen, MD beginning at 9:45 to 10:45 with visitation, and service at 11 a.m.
