Obituary for William W. "Bill" Mentzer

William W. “Bill” Mentzer, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on February 17, 2024. He was 91 years old.

Mr. Mentzer was born in Havre de Grace, MD, to John Clarence Mentzer and Clara Lillian (Jones) Mentzer. He was the devoted husband of the late Patricia Patton Mentzer, loving father of W. Laura Patton Mentzer, Ellen Mentzer Ennis (the late Larry Allyn Ennis), and William Eric Mentzer (Jennifer Thompson), grandfather of Christine Ennis Newkirk (Drew Newkirk, Sr.), Clara Marie Ennis and partner Connor Black, Claudia Heiger Ennis and partner Robert Miskimon, Jessica Irene Mentzer Hendrick (Gustaf), Lauren Emily Mentzer, Samantha Swarm (Bryce), Alex Costigan (James), great-grandfather of Mikayla Christine Newkirk, Drew Kelly Newkirk, Jr., Isla Swarm, and Ava Swarm. He was predeceased by his siblings, James Mentzer, Ralph Mentzer, Roy Mentzer, Irene Mentzer Danner, Betty Ann Mentzer Hutchison, and J. Noble Mentzer.

Mr. Mentzer was born and raised in Havre de Grace, MD. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his service to his country, he attended trade school and served his apprenticeship at the Frankfurt Arsenal. He worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground, the Naval Surface Weapons Center, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab as a Master Machinist, Model Maker and related supervisor roles.

Mr. Mentzer married the love of his life, Patricia Patton Mentzer and cherished his lifetime with her. He was a member of Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, The Associated Free and Accepted Masons, Susquehanna Lodge 130, and was twice a Past Master. He started Boy Scout Troop 967 and was a Den Leader for many years. Mr. Mentzer coached youth softball, was a Life Member of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and a Life Member of Elk’s Lodge 1564. He enjoyed traveling, was an avid hunter, a wonderful cook, and loved animals and pets. He was his own handyman. Mr. Mentzer had a way of making everyone he touched, especially his grandchildren, feel uniquely important.

A viewing will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, 101 South Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD. Pastor Norman Obenshain will officiate. Interment will be held at McKendree United Methodist Cemetery, Airville, PA.
