Aretta Levon McManus, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on November 21, 1936, in Baltimore, Maryland, Aretta lived a full life dedicated to family, community, and service.
Aretta's unwavering commitment to education was evident in her lengthy career in food service at Darlington Elementary School. She cherished her time at the school, fostering friendships and nurturing the growth of countless children. Her dedication extended beyond the classroom, as she served for many years in the Parent-Teacher Association (P.T.A.), striving to enhance the educational experience for both students and their families. She also worked for Bata Shoe Company and BJ's Wholesale Club.
An active member of Victorious Faith Fellowship, Aretta had a heart full of love for the children in her community. She spent many joyful hours babysitting at church, sharing her warmth with those around her. Her compassion extended further as she volunteered at the local homeless shelter, embodying the spirit of generosity and kindness that defined her life.
In her leisure time, Aretta relished the challenges of crossword and jigsaw puzzles, often finding peace in their intricate designs and the joy they brought to her day.
Aretta is survived by her loving family, including sons David and Jeffrey McManus, grandchildren; Michael McManus, Josh Sullivan, Heather Roleck, Jeffrey McManus, Jr., Christopher McMaus, Brandon Sullivan, Ryan McManus, and Alecia McManus, great-grandchildren Matthew Sullivan, Abby Burke, Victoria Sullivan, Noah Rhinehart, Caleb Sullivan, Mackenzie McManus, Kayla Roleck, Brianna Roleck, Aubrey Sullivan, and Everleigh Roleck, who carry her legacy of love forward. Aretta was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald McManus, her parents, Reid Carr and Elma Comer Thomas, her son, Edward McManus, daughter, Deborah Robinette, and sisblings,Betty Coldiron and Edward Borise.
A memorial service in honor of Aretta will be held on April 3, 2026, at 7:00 PM at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A. Prior to the service, friends and family are invited for a public visitation starting at 5:00 PM. We invite all who knew and loved Aretta to join us in celebrating her remarkable life and the profound impact she had on so many.
Aretta will be remembered for her infectious spirit, her loving heart, and her unwavering dedication to family and community. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
