Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Higgins, who left us peacefully on July 29, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on July 6, 1939, in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Barbara lived a life filled with love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends.

Barbara was a beloved wife to Joseph Higgins, Sr. and a devoted mother to their son, Joseph Higgins, Jr. (Suzanne) She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren, Cole Higgins and Will Higgins (Abbey), and took great pride in watching them grow. She is also survived by her dear sister, Audrey Smith and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents, Herbert McCarney and Lula Mae Welty McCarney, her brother, Herbie McCarney, and sister, Linda Bowman.

A remarkable human being, Barbara had a gentle spirit that drew people to her. She never met a stranger, and her compassionate nature extended not only to her family but also to her many friends and neighbors and her beloved dog.

Professionally, Barbara made her mark in the textile industry as a dedicated personnel Manager at Bata Shoe Company, where her expertise in human resources shined. She was a life-long learner and an engaged community member, notably participating as a member of Toastmasters International, where she honed her public speaking skills and built lasting connections.

Barbara loved both baseball and football and was a fan of the Orioles and Ravens especially Her enthusiasm for life was matched by her devotion to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, where she was a dedicated member and a constant source of support to her church community.

Family and friends are invited to honor Barbara's life during a funeral service that will be held at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A. on August 4, 2026, at 1:00 pm. Prior to the service, a public visitation will take place at the same location beginning at 12:00 pm. Interment will be held at Angel Hill Cemeterty.

As we celebrate the beautiful life of Barbara Ann Higgins, let us remember her warmth, her laughter, and the love she shared with everyone she encountered. In the hearts of those who knew her, her spirit will forever remain alive.
