With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Clarence Coale Hawkins Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Clarence was a hardworking man throughout his life, finding joy in helping and serving others, and found happiness in the simple pleasures of life.
Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland on March 2, 1935, to the late Charles Hawkins and Ida (Lilly) Buerhaus. Clarence was a dedicated equipment operator for many years at the Churchville SHA Shop of the State Highway Administration, where he retired in 1999. Clarence's work ethic and commitment to his job were commendable.
Clarence, known for his compassionate and hardworking nature, was a loving patriarch to his family. He cherished his wife, Elizabeth "Betty," and shared a special bond with his children Catherine Thompson, Coale Hawkins (Vickie), Mark Hawkins (Heidi), and Daniel Hawkins (Kelly). His legacy lives on through his grandchildren Heath and Carrie Thompson, Eric and Rachel Hawkins, Joshua Williams, Anna Casselberry, Jillian Taylor, Kristi McAtee, and Angela Culbertson, as well as his great-grandchildren Madison, Chase, Ryann and Abby Thompson, Jeffrey Pustay, III, Riley and Layla McAtee, and Nolan Culbertson. Clarence also leaves behind his sisters, Sarah Cowan (Woody) and Vera Elliott and was predeceased by his seven other siblings.
Clarence's zest for life extended to his hobbies - be it his love for square dancing with his wife or his fondness for classic cars, a 1966 convertible mustang, but particularly his cherished 1965 Mustang gifted by his children. Clarence was a passionate gardener who found solace in tending to his vegetable garden and flower beds. He embraced outdoor activities, camping adventures, and memorable bus trips with his beloved wife. He treasured these moments shared with family and friends, creating everlasting memories that will be cherished for generations to come. Together, they will remember him for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love that he shared with all those around him.
A Celebration of Life to honor Clarence's life will be held on May 6, 2024, from 10 A.M. to 12:00 pm at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace, Maryland. Where a funeral service will be held at 12 P.M.
The community gathers to pay tribute to a man whose presence brought warmth and happiness to those around him. Clarence's memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
