Obituary
Eric Gerard Sumwalt, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on February 1, 2025, at the age of 54. Born on August 25, 1970, in Havre de Grace, MD, Eric's warmth and kindness touched the lives of many throughout the community.
A natural healer at heart, Eric owned and operated iON Massage & Spa in Havre de Grace, where his clients became family, drawn to his soothing spirit and gentle nature. He dedicated his life to helping others through his work as a massage therapist with a specialty in craniosacral therapy.
Eric's interests extended beyond his profession; collecting crystals, immersing himself in the soothing melodies of classic rock music, attending festivals, watching thrilling movies and shows, and getting swept away by fantastical worlds in video games.
Eric had a unique ability to infuse joy into everyday moments. He'd dance and sing while making meals, make up silly little songs and phrases, scream "YEAH!" at the end of a movie to scare everyone after the hero saves the day, acted like a baboon to make his kids laugh, and gave the biggest, warmest hugs.
He leaves behind a loving family that will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. Eric is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, Lauren; his children, Autumn Kulaga-Engoren (David), Jordan Haga, Micayla Sumwalt (Micah), and Teagan Sumwalt; his grandsons, Benjamin and Oliver Engoren; and his brothers, Karl (Jerri), Christopher, and Dean (Lauren) Sumwalt. Eric was preceded in death by his son, Joshua Haga. Eric's legacy of love and compassion will resonate through all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held for Eric's life at Rock's State Park Pavillion, near Eric's cherished King & Queen Seat on May 4th, 2025. We invite all who knew him and were touched by his kindness to join in honoring a remarkable individual whose spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
