Obituary

Havre de Grace, MD - With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Ernesto Policarpio Mendoza, a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished friend, who left this world peacefully on April 12, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on December 24, 1932, in the Philippines, Ernesto dedicated his life to medicine and his family. He was a man of purpose from an early age-someone who chose a path of service and never wavered from it. His journey into medicine was not simply a career choice; it was a calling. He dedicated himself to healing others, to easing pain, and to offering hope where it was often in short supply. Through long hours, difficult decisions, and countless sacrifices, he lived out what it truly means to care for humanity.

That same spirit of service led him to the United States National Guard, where he served as the State Surgeon of Maryland. In that role, he stood at the intersection of courage and compassion-caring for those who risked everything, often in the most challenging conditions. He did not seek recognition or praise; he simply did what needed to be done, with quiet strength and unwavering commitment.
Ernesto was a man of deep compassion and unwavering dedication, both in his profession and his personal life. Known for his gentle spirit and insightful wisdom, he guided countless patients and colleagues throughout his career at St Joseph Hospital. He was not just a healer but a mentor who inspired many in the field of medicine to embrace kindness as an essential part of healing.

As a Master Mason and a proud member of the Boumi Temple, Ernesto's commitment to service extended beyond his professional life, reflecting his belief in community and brotherhood. Those who knew him will remember his warm smile and his passion for life. Ernesto found joy in many pursuits, including golfing, fishing, boating, and gardening-each activity serving as a testament to his love for the outdoors and the beauty of nature.

Ernesto is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Benita Mendoza, and their six children: Dr. Ernesto M. Mendoza, Jr. (Doug), Gregory Alan Mendoza (Theresa), Christine Rose Musser (Steven), Carolyn Marie Mendez (William "Rand"), Melani Ann Mendoza-Henkle, and Mark Patrick Mendoza (Richelle). He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, including Allison Musser, Kaden Henkle, Sarah Mendoza, Makali Henkle, Ian Musser, Patrick Mendoza, Magdalena (Maggie) Mendez, William Mendez, Aedan Mendoza, Matthew Mendoza, Brooke Davis, Kyle Davis, Brett Snyder, and Sylvia Shawkey, along with his great-grandchildren: Benjamin Dial, Lila Jachelski, James Snyder, Theo Snyder, River Livingston, and Tatum Livingston and his best friend Mallie. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Ruth DeLaCruz. Ernesto was preceded in death by: his parents, Aurelio Mateo Mendoza and Corona Policarpio Mendoza, and siblings, Luz Yukoya, and Lt. Col. Bayani Mendoza

In honor of Ernesto's life and legacy, the family will hold a private family service, Sunday April 19, at 4:00pm. A celebration of life where all who knew him are invited to come together in a spirit of celebration will be announced at a later date.
As we remember Dr. Ernesto Policarpio Mendoza, we not only mourn his loss but also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived, marked by compassion, dedication, and love. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
