Obituary

Evelyn Pauline Hendrix (née Sampson) passed away very peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2024, with family by her side. Evelyn's 90th birthday had recently been celebrated with a happy gathering of family and friends.

Evelyn was born on January 27, 1934, in Havre de Grace to Catherine and Ed "Pop" Sampson. Theirs was a busy household of seven children. Evelyn was the sister of Sue Lingenfelter, Kay Schnell, and the late Shirley Mann, Billy Sampson, Jimmy Sampson, and Sam Sampson. Many are the stories told of sibling fights and rivalries, assigning blame to the other sibling, scores of chores, pinching pennies…but always lots of love.

Evelyn lived in Havre de Grace until she met the love of her life, the late Willard "Bill" Rudolph Hendrix. This handsome Air Force sergeant caught her eye and Evelyn soon became a dedicated military wife for 21 years before Bill retired. The Air Force took them overseas to Germany and to posts in Indiana and Virginia, but they always found time to reconnect with Evelyn's family in Havre de Grace and Bill's family in Alabama. Following retirement from the Air Force, Evelyn and Bill settled in Woodbridge, VA for many years before returning to Havre de Grace as their final home. Together, Bill and Evelyn shared 57 wonderful years.

Evelyn loved her role as homemaker and mother. She was the very proud mom of two sons: Robin Grant Hendrix (Jeannie) of Burnsville, MN; and Mark Stephen Hendrix (Rebecca), of Front Royal, VA. Her grandchildren, Alison, Grayson, Lauren, Elisabeth, and Holly adored Evelyn and cherished their visits to Grandma and Grandpa's house. Evelyn was also a really great, Great-Grandmother to Finleigh, Nolan, Logan, Caleb and Aubrey.

Anyone who knew Evelyn was well acquainted with her cooking. When you came to the Hendrix home, you would not leave hungry. Her apple pies were legendary and somehow her oyster stew tasted better than anyone else's. Evelyn loved to sew and make quilts for her family, dress-up costumes for her grandchildren, and special dresses for their dolls. Evelyn also loved to draw, and she would write poems and stories after her grandchildren visited, so they would have memories of their time with her.

Evelyn had a talent for playing the piano and organ. Music brought her joy. She and her sisters often sang at First Baptist Church in Havre de Grace when they were growing up. Evelyn continued playing music at Riverview Baptist Church in Woodbridge VA, where she and Bill were long-time active parishioners.

Recently, Evelyn shared that she was grateful to be blessed with such a loving family who were always there for her and took care of her after Bill died. We want to thank our Havre de Grace family who helped Evelyn achieve her dream of living out her life in her hometown.
