James Ernest Edwards
James Ernest Edwards of Havre de Grace passed away July 19, 2009. He was 88. He was born, and grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. When World War II began, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. His ship, the LST 543, took part in the landings on D-Day, and later took part in landings in the Pacific. After World War II, he settled in Havre de Grace. He found a job in his field of gunnery at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1985 as a Test Director.
On January 8, 1955, he married his wife, the former Mary Frances Cook, at St. Patrick's Church in Havre de Grace. They lived first in Perryville and then in Havre de Grace in homes which he built himself. He and his wife had four children, James Jr., Richard, David, and Kathy.
After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, especially trips for reunions with the crew of his LST. He also enjoyed playing golf in his retirement. He played regularly for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Frances Edwards, and his four children, James Jr. and his wife Denise of Forest Hill, Richard and his wife Dominique of Aberdeen, David, of Middle River, and Kathy and her husband Rusty Fendick of Bel Air. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who has given his family many happy memories. He was also a member of American Legion Post 47 in Havre de Grace.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 22, from 6-8 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, Maryland 21078. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 23, at 11:00 AM, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 615 Congress Avenue, Havre de Grace, Maryland 21078. Pallbearers will be James E. Edwards, Jr., Richard Edwards, R. David Edwards, Russell Fendick, James Edwards, III, and Jason Edwards. Interment will be private.
