Obituary

James Edward Newby, a longtime resident of Havre de Grace, Maryland, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, at the age of 84. He was born on February 23, 1942 in Indiana and moved to Maryland in 1958. Throughout his life, Jim was known for his dedication to his family, his community, and the people around him.

Jim’s life was defined by hard work, commitment, and family. On June 9, 1962, he married the love of his life, Gertrude “Trudy” Ellen Newby. Together, Jim and Trudy shared more than 64 years of marriage, building a life centered around family, faith, love, and countless memories.

Jim was a hardworking and dedicated man who took great pride in providing for his family. He spent 25 years with Bata Shoe Company before dedicating decades to serving the City of Havre de Grace in various roles, including procurement, public information, and ultimately Director of Administration. Known as a dependable and trusted presence, Jim’s commitment to his work and community reflected his values of responsibility, perseverance, and pride in a job well done.

But Jim’s greatest pride was always his family.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He treasured time spent with his family and took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow. His legacy will live on through the family he loved so dearly and the values he passed down to them.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Archie Wilmer Newby; his mother, Gladys Marie; his brother, Earl Lee Newby; and his beloved daughter, Kelli Renee Newby.

Jim also had a special place in his heart for his beloved pets over the years, Heidi, Zipper, and Leo, who brought him companionship, joy, and countless cherished memories throughout his life.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Trudy Newby, with whom he shared more than six decades of marriage; his sisters, Shirley Logan and Cherly Ann Kerkes (Mike); his son, Robert “Lance” Newby (Beth); his daughter, Kerri Sue Newby (Devry); his grandchildren, Jordin Shire Newby, James Gregory Newby (Andrea), and Austin James Newby (Rachael Fox); and his many nieces and nephews.

Though his family will feel his absence deeply, Jim leaves behind a lifetime of memories, lessons, stories, and love that will continue through the generations. His greatest legacy is not measured by the years he worked or the positions he held, but by the family he built, the people he helped, and the lives he touched.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, coworker, neighbor, and friend, James Edward Newby lived a life of service, perseverance, and love.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest peacefully, Pop. Your work here is done. Your legacy lives on in all of us.
