It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Edward Smith, who left us peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on January 16, 1942, in London, England, John moved to the United States in 1952 and made his loving home in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1960-1967, reflecting his steadfast dedication to service and community. Ed served as a Radar Man aboard the USS Guadalupe. Later in his Naval career, he served aboard PBRs attached to the USS Mark with the Brown Water Navy and the Mobile Riverine Force. For his military service, Ed was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal (3 Bronze Stars). Following his military career, he continued his commitment to helping others as a Respiratory Therapist for the Veteran's Administration, where he exemplified compassion and care for his patients.
A member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Ed had a profound love for the sea, particularly tall ships and boating. His love for the sea led him to purchase his first new boat and named it The Lady Di after his beautiful wife Diane leading to numerous exploits on the high seas. His adventurous spirit was matched only by his love for family, as he cherished every moment spent with his wife, Diane, his sons, Brian James Smith (Irma) and Sean Edward Smith (Bree), and his beloved grandchildren, Owen Thomas Smith and Nathan Patrick Smith. Family gatherings and breakfasts with friends were highlights of his life, where laughter, stories, and camaraderie were always abundant.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Smith and Bridgett Walsh Smith and his loving Uncle Russell Grove and Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill Carney.
Ed's passion for technology was evident in his fascination with computers, which he embraced with enthusiasm and curiosity. He found joy in discovering the latest innovations and sharing his knowledge with others.
In celebration of his life, a public viewing will be held at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A. on June 1, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass in honor of Ed's life will take place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on June 2, 2026, at 10:00 AM.
John Edward Smith will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the love he shared and the lives he touched. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love he cherished so dearly.
