John Harry Hastings, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, departed this world on February 3, 2026, at Christiana Care Hospital, leaving behind a legacy imbued with love, laughter, and unyielding dedication. John was born on January 23, 1941, in Tyrone, PA, the son of the late Clarence Hastings and Pauline (Lotz) Hastings. He is preceded in death by his brother William Hastings. He navigated through life with a spirit as vibrant as the blooms he cherished in his gardens, a testament to his nurturing nature and playful heart.
John's professional journey spanned nearly four decades, as he served as the I.T. Systems Manager at McCormick & Company from 1968 until his retirement in 2006. His career was marked not only by technical expertise but also by a genuine affection for those he worked with.
John enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 7, 1963. As a proud Army veteran, he achieved the rank of Captain, and his experiences as an Army Spotter Pilot during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1966 were a testament to his courage and commitment. His military accomplishments brought him a sense of honor and pride, shaping his character and ideals.
From his jovial manner as he plotted goofy pranks on those he loved to his reflections of gratitude during his traditional toasts at family gatherings, John was an embodiment of love and laughter. Whether he was tending to his garden, hiking the scenic Ma & Pa trail in Bel Air, enjoying a board game or a game of cards, or passionately cheering on his favorite teams-the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles-he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Always a dog lover, he found happiness and companionship with his dogs through the years: Ollie, Bentley, and Frosty.
Family was paramount to John. He leaves behind his treasured wife of 57 years, Barbara L. Hastings, who stands as a pillar of strength amid the profound loss. His legacy continues through his children: Kristin Rupprecht and her husband, Kurt; David Hastings and his wife, Amy; and Whitney Joseph and her husband, Michael. Each of his grandchildren-Colin Rupprecht, Madalyn Rupprecht, Kaelyn Joseph, Paige Hastings, Ella Joseph, and Jack Hastings-holds a piece of his spirit, capturing the love and laughter that defined their grandfather. He is also survived by his nieces, Heidi Hastings-Brien and Amy Adams.
Though John Harry Hastings has departed from this earthly plane, his indelible mark remains etched on the hearts of those he loved and who loved him in return. A visitation will be held for all whose lives he touched on February 10, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a memorial service starting at 4:00 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 927 Pulaski Highway, Havre De Grace, MD.
