Obituary

It is with profound sadness yet joyful remembrance that we announce the passing of John Frank Roth, Jr., affectionately known as "Jack," who left us peacefully on December 9, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on October 28, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late John F. Roth, Sr. and Mildred (Solesha) Roth. Jack lived a life rich with achievements, love, and laughter. He resided in Port Deposit, Maryland, where he cherished moments with his family and community.

Jack was a devoted husband to his wife, Rachel Ashby, a loving father to his son, John "Jack" Roth, III, and his daughter Leanna L. Kelley. He took great pride in being a grandfather to his three cherished granddaughters, Deseree Harris (Justin), Aimee Hedrick, and Brittany Ortiz (Miguel), and his adored great-grandchildren Seth, Sara, Marley, Ayson, Cody, Jenna, Quinn, Tristan, Lenny, and Zachary. He is survived by his cousins and best friends Ron and Bryan Solesha. Jack's family was his greatest joy, and he found immense happiness in spending time with them, creating cherished memories that will live on in their hearts. A devoted family man, Jack held a special place in his heart for each of them, always eager to share moments of joy and laughter. Jack had an infectious sense of humor, often delighting family and friends with his signature "Mr. Finger," eliciting laughter. He initiated a joyful tradition of the "Old Codgers Club" with friends and colleagues and enjoyed lively "Driveway parties" with his cherished neighbors. In a beautiful gesture, Jack became an ordained minister to officiate the wedding of his granddaughter, an experience he treasured deeply. His pride in his Serbian heritage was a significant part of his identity, and he embraced the values of hard work that were instilled in him by his family. Jack's love for his country was equally balanced by his proud heritage, as he often expressed satisfaction with the Presidential Election results, reflecting his passion for civic engagement.

A distinguished engineer, Jack earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh followed by a master's degree from Drexel University. His remarkable career spanned numerous positions at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he dedicated many years to serving his country as a P.E. (Professional Engineer). Notably, he held the prestigious title of First Civilian Deputy Commander and ultimately retired as an ATC Director, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and dedication in the field of engineering. Jack's expertise extended to work at the Nuclear Plant and NASA, where his innovative spirit shone brightly.

He traveled the world in pursuit of adventure. Jack was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and an avid hunter, often venturing to Argentina with his son. He enjoyed hunting with his cousins Bryan and Ron Solesha. He was a proud member of the NRA and enjoyed collecting guns, crafting knives, and making duck calls. Jack's spirit thrived in the great outdoors, whether he was fishing or simply soaking in the beauty of nature. His love for life extended to his traveling adventures in Mexico, where he frequently found joy at Senor Frogs with a cheap scotch drink in hand.
A proud member of the NRA and a skilled craftsman, he took delight in making knives and collecting duck calls. The joys of life for Jack included hearty meals filled with oysters and deviled eggs, and evenings spent with popcorn and marathons of James Bond movies.

Jack's compassion extended beyond his family to his beloved pets, including his cherished Boston Terriers, "Sophi" and "Rockstar," and the cherished memories of his late Black Labrador dogs "Tar," "Boy," and his Doberman "Amber."

Family and friends are invited to honor Jack's life at a memorial visitation to be held on December 13, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 927 Pulaski Highway, Havre de Grace, MD. Where a memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM, celebrating his remarkable life and legacy.

As we gather to honor Jack, let us remember him not with sorrow, but with joy for the incredible legacy he leaves behind. He lived life on his terms, embraced every opportunity, and loved deeply. Jack was a remarkable man whose spirit will continue to inspire and bring smiles to those who knew him. Messages of condolences and memories to share may be made at www.zellmanfuneralhome.com
