Obituary

Joseph David Gallion, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away on February 10, 2026, from complications related to Alzheimer's Disease. Born on September 3, 1946, in Havre De Grace, MD, he lived a life filled with laughter, love, and the joys of family, calling Aberdeen, MD, his home.

To those who loved him, Joseph will be remembered as a joyful spirit with a penchant for teasing and a heartwarming sense of humor. He often lightened the mood with his clever jokes, always quick with a playful response. Whenever his dear wife, Carol, inquired about when he would attend to his "chores," his playful retort of "One of these days" became a cherished hallmark of his personality.

Joseph shared an extraordinary bond with his wife, Carol (Dillon) Gallion, whom he met while tending to cows-an encounter marked by an endearing mishap of falling in manure after whistling to get her attention. Their love story blossomed, culminating in a marriage that spanned over 45 wonderful years. Together, they raised a family rooted in love and laughter, including daughters Kathy Hindenlang (Donald) and Amelia Zyski (Michael), and son, John "Frank" Steinhilber. He leaves behind a cherished legacy in his grandchildren: Brittany McCray, Amber Steinhilber, Lily Corpuz, Hailey Zyski, and Michael Zyski, as well as his great-grandchild, Parker McCray. Joseph is also survived by his devoted brother, Nolan Gallion, Sr., and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Russell E. Gallion, mother, Marie (Wirsing) Gallion, siblings, Charles "Lewis" Gallion, Earl T. Gallion, Helen "Betty" Knight, Russell A.W. Gallion, Phillip E. Gallion, and great-nephew, Nolan W. Gallion, III.

His passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for farming and milking cows, where he found joy and fulfillment. Joseph was a lifelong fan of the Baltimore Orioles. His competitive spirit shone through in his favorite card games, often played "for blood," especially Pitch and Pinochle. In family Monopoly games, he relished the moments when others landed on his properties, bringing laughter and friendly rivalry to the table.

Joseph's love for classic westerns, particularly those featuring John Wayne and shows like "Gunsmoke" and "Hee Haw," painted the backdrop of many happy evenings spent with family. He also enjoyed "Mash", which reminded him of his time in the service. Known for his easygoing nature while babysitting, he was often the laid-back caregiver who would fall asleep while keeping a watchful eye on his grandchildren.

Joseph served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic from 1966 to 1972, completing four years of active duty followed by two years of inactive duty. Following his release from active duty, Joseph began a long career with the Maryland Transportation Authority, retiring in 2009 after 37 years of dedicated service. During his tenure, he worked on the JFK Highway and was responsible for delivering state mail to office buildings. Joseph was also a proud member of Churchville Presbyterian Church, where he found community and friendship.

Family and friends are invited to a public viewing held at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., on February 15, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Joseph David Gallion will be held at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., on February 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM, preceded by a public viewing at the same location beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be held at Harford Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Pallbearers will be Frank Steinhilber, Nolan Gallion Jr., David Gallion, Jason Gallion, Don Hindenlang, and Mike Zyski.

In honoring Joseph's life, we will remember a man who loved deeply, laughed often, and whose spirit will always be a light in the hearts of those who knew him.
