Joseph James Smyth, Jr., of Churchville, MD, passed away on July 26, 2023. He was 73 years old.

Mr. Smyth was born in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, to Joseph James Smyth and Pearl Thelma Rice Smyth. He was the loving father of Jaime McFarland, Sarah Pfleiger (Wesley), Rachel Smyth, Hannah Smyth, and Abigail Smyth, grandfather of Emily and Molly McFarland, Liam, Lilliana, and Lainey Pfleiger, Adrien and Noel Tapia, and Cameron Jackson, brother of Teresa Ashby (Jerry), Mark Smyth, Kenny Smyth, Michael Smyth, Pauline Smyth Farris (Kimbal), and the late Sheila Grace (David Grace), and loving companion of Sandra Bolt.

Mr. Smyth retired from the State Highway Administration. He was an avid archer, bowhunter and a member of the Harford Bowmen. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, crabbing, and cooking. Mr. Smyth also enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023, from 2-5PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 12 PM, at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Fremont Cemetery.
