It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lloyd Wayne Campbell, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and esteemed mathematician, who left this world peacefully on March 14, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on February 25, 1928, in Bucyrus, Ohio, Lloyd lived a life filled with love, adventure, and dedication to his family and profession.
Lloyd was a proud graduate, earning his Master's Degree, and spent the majority of his career serving his country as a mathematician at the Department of the Army Ballistics Research Lab. He worked on the Eniac, an early computer, and served on international standards committees for the Cobol and Fortran computer languages. His contributions to civil service were marked with respect and a commitment to excellence, earning him prestigious awards and a lasting legacy in his field.
Outside of his professional life, Lloyd was a man of many passions. He loved dancing and continued to dance until almost the end of his life. In his younger years, he spent a lot of time on basketball courts and softball fields and was an excellent fast-pitch softball pitcher. His enthusiasm for sports was matched only by his keen interest in politics, enriching conversations that inspired those around him. A voracious reader, Lloyd was always seeking knowledge, and his ingenuity made him remarkably handy around the home.
Lloyd's love for the great outdoors was apparent in his many adventures throughout his life. Lloyd and Barbara enjoyed travel, camping, hiking, and riding bicycles, creating joyous memories with friends and family that will be cherished forever.
He is survived by his loving children, Kenneth Campbell (Millie), Steven Campbell, and Sharon Hudler (Michael), who carry forward his spirit and values. Lloyd was also a proud grandfather to Nicole Hudler, Bret Winey, Michael Winey, Casey Campbell, Carlin Campbell, and Stephanie Weckerly, and a treasured great-grandfather to Carter Winey, Griffin Winey, Bennett Winey, Hadley Winey, Miliana Weckerly, Mackenzie Weckerly, and Hudson Weckerly. His family, both immediate and extended, will forever hold him in their hearts as a source of wisdom, love, and laughter. Lloyd was preceded in death by his loving wife, his cherished daughter Linda Winey, his parents, Wayne and Carrrie Campbell, and his siblings Lucille Cardin, Myron Campbell, and Elden Campbell.
A public visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 11 AM until 12 PM, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 201 Mount Royal Avenue, Aberdeen, MD. Funeral services will begin at 12 PM.
Lloyd Wayne Campbell leaves behind a legacy of kindness, intelligence, and joy that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him. He will be missed dearly, yet his spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of his family and friends.
Contributions may be made in his memory to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 201 Mount Royal Avenue, Aberdeen, MD 21001.
