Obituary

Lois Evelyn James, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on August 9, 1938, in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Lois lived a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments with her family.

Lois devoted over 20 years of her life to her role as store manager at Joe's the Motorist's Friend, where her warmth and dedication made a lasting impression on both colleagues and customers. Her kind heart and nurturing spirit were evident to all who knew her.

A proud resident of Churchville, Maryland, Lois found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She treasured time spent with family, enjoying delightful meals of steamed crabs, and creating memories on her deck, where she would watch hummingbirds and birds flit about. Her love for animals was unyielding, and she took great delight in gardening and nurturing the beauty of her surroundings. Lois also enjoyed unwinding with her favorite game shows and reveling in the company of her loved ones.

Lois is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Robert James, Sr.; her loving daughters, Brenda Griffey (Rick) and Debbie Van Marter (Clint); and her adored grandchildren, Zachary Griffey (Melanie), Justin Griffey (Lauren), Brandon Slicer (Jenina), Andrew Slicer, and Megan Atterson (Dylan). She was a proud great-grandmother to Abby Griffey, Brayden Griffey, Jeremiah Edwards, Alyssa Slicer, Reagan Griffey, Cole Griffey, and Amelia Atterson. Lois will be deeply missed by her brothers, Eddie and Jerry Mahan, and her sister, Carol Schultz, along with numerous friends and extended family. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Rabe Holcomb and Dora Love Mahan and stepfather Charles Mahan, her daughter, Anita Burke, her son Robert "Robbie" James, and her sister, Gail Parks.

In honor of Lois's life and legacy, a public visitation will be held at Zellman's Funeral Home, P.A. on April 18, 2026, from 2:00 -3:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to join together to celebrate the remarkable life of Lois Evelyn James, reflecting on the countless ways she touched the hearts of those around her.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to Humane Society of Harford County, Smith's Chapel Methodist Church, or Friends of the Concord Point Lighthouse.

May her memory live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.
