Obituary

Martha "Mike" Michele Langley

Martha "Mike" Michelle Langley, born June 13, 1952, at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, passed away peacefully in her home on August 31, 2026.

Mike was raised in Havre de Grace, Maryland, where she attended Havre de Grace High School. She went on to enjoy a fulfilling career in the medical field, working throughout the course of her career as both an office administrator and a respiratory therapist.

Mike was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at an early age, and over the course of her life she became a powerful advocate for conscientious self-care. She understood that caring for herself was not about allowing an illness to dictate her life, but about giving herself the freedom to live it fully. Through knowledge, discipline, and a deep commitment to her own well-being, Mike maintained her independence and continued doing the things she loved. She never allowed diabetes to define her or diminish the richness of her life.

If anything, the way Mike cared for herself reflected something fundamental about the way she lived: with intention, determination, independence, and an appreciation for the life she had.

But the story of Mike's life cannot truly be told through where she lived, the schools she attended, the work she did, or even the challenges she faced. Mike's life was defined by the way she loved the people around her.

She found joy in antiquing, music, and attending jazz festivals. She was an avid reader and an enthusiastic collector of vintage Christmas décor. In fact, Mike's love of Christmas was unparalleled-so much so that she joyfully kept her home fully decorated year-round. Christmas wasn't simply a season in Mike's house; it was something she carried with her all year long.

Mike also had a keen sense of fashion and an incredible eye for beautiful things. Her personal style reflected that, as did the spaces she created around herself, which were always thoughtfully and beautifully curated.

And when life was a little quieter, Mike loved nothing more than settling in and enjoying the Hallmark Channel-a simple pleasure that brought her comfort and happiness. She also never seemed to meet an animal she didn't love, most recently sharing her home and her heart with her beloved Atticus.

Mike never had children of her own, but that never limited the size of her family. Quite the opposite. Her friends became her family, their families became hers, and generations of people came to know and love her simply as "Aunt Mike." She understood, perhaps better than most, that family isn't defined only by blood. It is created by showing up, caring deeply, and loving people well.

And Mike loved people extraordinarily well.

She was remarkably caring and profoundly generous. She was kind, funny, loving, and carried with her a positive outlook that remained one of her defining qualities. Mike had a gift for making people feel special-not because she was trying to, but because when Mike cared about you, you knew it.

Her generosity was legendary among those who loved her. She gave freely and wholeheartedly, often leaving the person on the receiving end searching for the right words or insisting that she had done too much.

Mike's response was simple and became one of her favorite sayings:

"Just say thank you."

That was Mike. Giving wasn't something she did for recognition or repayment. It was simply part of who she was.

And no matter the subject, the circumstance, or how ordinary the conversation might have been, Mike rarely let it end without making sure the person on the other end knew one more thing:

"I love you."

And she meant it.

Mike leaves behind a family far larger than any family tree could adequately capture-a family made up of relatives, lifelong friends, chosen family, their children and grandchildren, and countless people fortunate enough to have been welcomed into her life.

She was everyone's Aunt Mike.

For those who loved her, her absence will be profound. But so too is the extraordinary gift of having been loved by her. She spent her life making people feel special, cared for, welcomed, and loved.

And now, after a lifetime of Mike reminding the rest of us what to say when we were overwhelmed by her generosity, perhaps there is only one appropriate thing left for us to say to her:

Thank you, Mike.

We love you.

All who knew and loved Mike are warmly invited to join us in celebrating her life on Monday, September 7, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Concord Point Lighthouse Park in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

This will be a gathering to remember Mike as she lived-to come together, share stories, laugh, remember, and celebrate a woman who meant so much to so many.

Drinks and appetizers will follow at a location to be determined, where we hope everyone will continue gathering and sharing their favorite stories and memories of Mike.

Please come as you are, bring a story if you have one, and help us celebrate a life that gave all of us so very much.
