Obituary

Mary Catherine Phillips McLhinney of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away peacefully in her home, on Nov. 1, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on Fort Eustis, VA, on Feb 14, 1931, she was the loving daughter of Harry and Catherine (Roman Hromyak) Phillips of Perryville, MD and preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charles Leo McLhinney, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her loving big brothers Harry (Beanball) Phillips, Jr., and Michael (Mickey) Phillips, both of Perryville.

Mary was a 1948 graduate of Perryville High School and a 1951 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at Perry Point Hospital until she joined her husband in operating McLhinney's New Depot in Havre de Grace, for 34 years. Mary was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Church where she also served as a sacristan for many years, a lifetime member of American Legion Post 47, a member of Susquehanna Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary, and a volunteer at Grace Place food pantry, and numerous charity organizations in HDG.

She loved her family, her church, and her community, and enjoyed taking long drives, quilting, spending time with her great granddaughter, and staying at her cabin in McAlisterville, PA, where she and her husband spent their honeymoon and made many family memories. She loved doing crosswords, reading, and margaritas. Being born on Valentine's Day, she always enjoyed a party and beautiful flowers.

She was the mother of Charles Leo McLhinney, Jr., of Oceanside, CA, and Mary Frances Walker and Annie McLhinney Cochran of Havre de Grace. She was the grandmother of Frances Kelley (Steve) Bowman of Perryville, Chantal (Bruce) Richmond, of Glen Arm, MD, R.C. Walker of Baltimore, MD, Nicole (Mick) Plemons of Temecula, CA, Nicholas Cochran (Shawna) of Anaheim, CA and Caitlin McLhinney Cochran (Gavin) of Aberdeen, MD. She was the great-grandmother of Connor Bowman (Kyralee) of Havre de Grace, Jarrett Bowman of Perryville, Charlotte Elizabeth Bolen of Aberdeen, Carly and Mallory Plemons of Southern California, and Jack, Juliette, Freya, and Fenrir of Santa Ana, CA. She was the sister-in-law to Jack McLhinney and Eleanor (Leonard) Ferguson of Havre de Grace, and the late Francis McLhinney, who was killed while fighting in World War II. She was the sister-in-law to the late Florence Phillips (Mickey) and late Peggy Patterson Phillips (Beanball). Mary was the adoring aunt of many nieces and nephews who cherished her kindness and candy treats.

She was the counselor for many altar servers. And finally, most important to the McLhinney Legacy, she was the second mother to hundreds of newsboys who came to visit her up until her very last days.

A viewing will be held on November 14, 2025, from 5-8 PM at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 927 Pulaski Highway, Havre de Grace, MD. A memorial mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church, 615 Congress Ave, Havre de Grace, MD, on November 15, 2025, at 10 AM, with burial to follow in Mt. Erin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Cemetery Fund at St. Patrick's Church, Francis McLhinney DAV Unit #15 (PO Box 292, Havre de Grace, MD 21078), or Grace Place Food Pantry, P.O Box 371, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.
