Michael Stephen Elder, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on June 21, 2024, at the age of 77. Born and raised in Havre de Grace by Robert and Helen Elder, he was the beloved husband of Nancy Long Elder, and devoted father to Maya (Mary) Elder. He is survived by his sister Carol Bryson, brothers Robert and Dennis Elder, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He joins his dear departed sisters Rosemary Pinamonti and Cathy Deibel.
During his 53-year career as an Attorney, he accomplished legal feats in landmark cases locally and nationally, including environmental protection for the Hudson River. His career included service at the Public Defender's Office, Department of Justice, the Maryland and New York Offices of the Attorney General, and the General Electric Company. In his retirement, he continued to take select cases, practicing law until his final days.
Michael's hobbies reflected his passion for service, physical fitness, and personal growth. He was a valued member of the Susquehanna Hose Company, achieving Firefighter One in his 60s. An avid hiker and traveler, he particularly enjoyed exploring the deserts of the American Southwest and conquering the harsh Patagonia region of South America. His other interests included marathon running, canoeing, golfing, and reading. Ultimately, he most enjoyed quality time spent with family and friends.
He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, community service, and advocacy. Throughout his life, he has never lost sight of his strong moral values and fierce love of family. As we remember his last moments spent in the peace of nature, we are reminded that those left behind are truly those lost in the woods; and as he did in life, Michael continues to walk a kind, purposeful, sunlit path.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 27, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 615 Congress Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD. Inurnment will be private. Contributions may be made in his memory to Save the Children or Doctors Without Borders.
