Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nelson Terry Perkins, 83, who departed this life peacefully and surrounded by family on October 20, 2025. Nelson (known to most as Terry) was born on September 25, 1942, in Owensboro, Kentucky to the late Hobart Prince Perkins and Dora Ray Perkins-Merrill. He was a 1960 graduate of Owensboro High School, excelling in choir and JROTC. Terry went on to become a theology student at Kentucky Wesleyan College, graduating with a BA degree in 1964.

Nelson dedicated his life to biblical study and serving others. At age 19, he was appointed to serve as a student pastor at Short Creek Methodist Church from 1961-1962. After graduating college, Terry joined the Peace Corps, teaching science, math, geography, and history at Holy Cross Mission in Bolahun, Liberia from 1964-1966.

After returning from the Peace Corps and getting married, Nelson proudly enlisted in the Army in 1973 and served until his honorable discharge in 1994. He reached the rank of Master Sergeant and was recognized for his dedication and bravery, earning numerous accolades including the Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, six Army Good Conduct Medals, a Bronze Service Star, and multiple service ribbons.

Upon retiring from the military, Nelson continued his dedication to service and education as a teacher with the Baltimore City Public School system for twelve years. He sought to impact his students' lives by inspiring them with his wisdom and kindness.

Outside of his professional life, Nelson pursued his interests with dedication and joy. He enjoyed writing and posting his own, original content and serving as a friend and mentor to some. Terry had a deep appreciation for Western movies and could work the topic into almost any conversation. He was a lifetime student of the bible and spent significant time studying and reading the Bible. As a devoted member of the APG Post Chapel, Terry was actively engaged in church activities, embracing the warmth of his faith community. He continued his love of singing by singing in the APG Post Chapel choir and, later, as part of the Cecil County Choral Society. He was also a proud member of Young at Heart, where friendships flourished.

Nelson is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marsha Perkins; his daughter, K-Nell Jones; his son, Darin Scott Perkins; his grandchildren, Felicia Renee Waldron (Samuel) and Peyton Jones; and his brother, John "Daniel" Perkins as well as six nieces and one nephew. In addition to his parents, Nelson was predeceased by his sisters, Glenda Wilbur and Bettye Reynolds-Fischer, niece Anne Marie Wilbur-Perkins, and nephew Randal Perkins.

Friends and family are invited to honor Nelson's memory at a funeral service to be held at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., on October 27, 2025, at 7:00 PM. Prior to the service, a public viewing will take place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. As we gather to celebrate his remarkable life, we will reflect on the profound legacy he leaves behind-a legacy of service, love, and unwavering faith.

In this time of sorrow, let us remember Nelson Terry Perkins not just for what he accomplished but for the warmth he shared with all, a gentle soul who touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.
