Obituary

Newton "Doc" Baker Blevins

Newton Baker "Doc" Blevins, 82, of Havre de Grace, died on January 7, 2010, after a prolonged illness. His wife Viola had predeceased him only seventy days prior, on October 27, 2009. Doc was born on May 1, 1927, in Chilhowie, Virginia, the youngest of seven children, of Newton Harmon Blevins and Alice Roe Blevins.

He moved to Havre de Grace during World War II, and held various jobs, including ones at Barnes' Sinclair Station on Route 40, Foley' s Drug Store, and the State Theatre, where he was a movie projectionist, and was once severely burned in a fire in the projection room.
On January 6, 1950, he married Viola Stankvich, and together in 59 years of marriage, they raised their three daughters, Deborah Diane Price, Melinda Lee Craig, and Pamela Ann DiMauro. Their three daughters and three sons-in-law, George Price, David Craig, and Biaggio DiMauro gave them seven grandchildren, Ian Anderson, Randolph Craig, Heather Hall, Courtney Tramontana, Pamela Overbay, Meghan DiMauro, and Hilary DiMauro, and eight great-grandchildren.

Doc and Vi operated a moving van franchise, as part of the Weber Moving and Storage, through the 1950's and 1960's. He then worked as a claim's adjuster, of Bainbridge Naval Training Center until the mid 1970's. In 1957 Doc was a Charter Member of the Havre de Grace Auxiliary Police Department, under the Captaincy of Henry Loeblein. (Only the second such organization in the country at the time.) The Auxiliary not only provided support to the Havre de Grace Police Department, but sponsored the Saturday Night Dance held at the Havre de Grace High School. They also started the Teen Center, originally on Seneca Avenue, and later above City Hall.

His interests included politics, the Orioles, the Ravens, the Redskins, travel, country music, and particularly dancing.

Funeral services were held at Zellman Funeral Home in Havre de Grace, on January 11, with interment at Harford Memorial Gardens. The Havre de Grace Police Honor Guard participated in the services. Pallbearers were Ian Anderson, Wayne Blevins, David Craig, Randolph Craig, Biaggio DiMauro, and George Price. Honorary pallbearers included Dr. Edward Loo, David Glenn, Robert McMillan, William Pruitt, Phillip Powell, and Frederick Schiminger.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Havre de Grace Police Department, 715 Pennington Avenue, Havre de Grace, Maryland 21078.
