Dr. Paul M. Ellner, a distinguished mathematician whose work profoundly impacted the U.S. Army, passed away on the evening of his 79th birthday, May 21, 2025.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Paul was the cherished son of Henry and Mollie Ellner. He pursued his passion for mathematics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, earning a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. His academic journey laid the foundation for a career dedicated to solving complex real-world problems.
Paul began his professional path as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Delaware. However, it was his tenure at the U.S. Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA) that defined his legacy. Over four decades, he developed groundbreaking reliability methodologies that enhanced the performance of military equipment. His contributions included authoring numerous reports, mentoring colleagues, and receiving several prestigious awards, including his 2023 induction into the U.S. Army Operations Research Systems Analysis (ORSA) Hall of Fame.
Beyond his professional achievements, Paul had a zest for life. He found joy in traveling for work, particularly to San Diego, and cherished lunch outings with friends and colleagues. An avid financial investor, he approached the markets with the same analytical rigor he applied to his work. Those who knew him will remember his sharp intellect, unwavering kindness, and a quiet sense of humor that brought warmth to every room.
In his retirement, Paul enjoyed watching sci-fi movies and shows such as Doctor Who and British mystery shows like Agatha Christie's Poirot while eating his daily bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup regularly made for him by his dear friend and caregiver, Rebecca Wentz.
In accordance with Paul's wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. To honor Paul's memory, individuals are invited to reflect on the profound impact he had on both his profession and the lives he touched.
Paul is survived by several cousins and their families.
