Ralph Alvin MacDonald, 86, of Colora, MD passed away Sunday October 26, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dolores; three children, Alvin, Debra, and John; two grandchildren, Jenny MacDonald and Cade Campbell; one great-grandchild, Phelan Mecklenberg; two brothers, George and Richard MacDonald; and one sister, Anne Tharp. He is predeceased by his parents, Glen and Mary MacDonald, and one brother, Robert.
Mr. MacDonald received a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from University of Maryland and a Master's degree in education from the University of Delaware. He served in the United States Army in Germany from 1955 to 1957.
Mr. MacDonald worked as an agriculture teacher, first in the Delaware school system for 9 years, then in the Cecil County, Maryland school system for 23 years. Later he was co-owner of Total Image, a Western and square dance clothing retail store, with his wife, Dolores.
He was a founding and charter member of First Christian Church of Havre de Grace, MD, and was instrumental in every aspect of its organization and growth. Christian faith being of primary importance in his life, he served in a number of church leadership capacities for 67 years, including as deacon, elder, board member, and board chairman from 2008 - 2013. He was appointed elder emeritus in 2000.
In his spare time, he loved gardening, horticulture and other agricultural pursuits, as well as square dancing, photography and travel throughout the United States. With Dolores, he made four road trips across the continent, visited every state in the US except Alaska and North Dakota, and frequently expressed profound astonishment at America's natural beauty. He was a loving husband, father and friend, and will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
A viewing will be held Wednesday October 29, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Zellman Funeral Home in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Funeral services will be held Thursday October 30, 2014 at 11:00 am at First Christian Church of Havre de Grace, Maryland.
