Richard Dee Burton, beloved husband, father, teacher, and artist, died on July 15, 2025 at the age of 81. Born on May 5, 1944, in Independence, Kansas, Richard dedicated his life to educating and inspiring others through the arts and his commitment to service. He graduated from Independence High School in 1962, from Independence Community College in 1964, and from Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia State University) in 1966 with a BS in Education. He completed an MA in Studio Art at Rutgers University in 1976. He was a lifelong learner and continued to take workshops and classes throughout his life.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Richard was drafted and served as a Military Policeman during the Vietnam War. Following his military service he returned to teaching. For many years, he was a loved and respected High School Art Teacher at Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch, New Jersey, where he ignited the creative passions of countless students. After relocating to Havre De Grace, Maryland, he continued to serve the community in a different capacity as a Logistics Specialist at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
Richard's artistic talents extended beyond the classroom. He was a gifted Book Artist, with his works displayed across the United States in university, library, and private collections. His commitment to the craft was exemplified through his involvement with the Moveable Book Society, the Book Arts Round Table of South Orange, NJ, and the Upper Chesapeake Book Arts Group. In his younger years, he also found joy in pottery, creating beautiful works that reflected his love for the medium.
Richard was not just an educator and artist, he was a compassionate soul who dedicated his time to helping others. He was actively involved in the food pantry at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Darlington, Maryland, embodying his belief in the importance of community service and sharing kindness.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Anne Burton, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and support. Richard is also survived by his son, Benjamin Burton, and many other friends and relatives. Richard was preceded in death by his father Orey Burton, mother, Mabel Burton, and siblings, Dale Bass, Charles Burton, Jerry Burton, and Gladys Daniel.
Richard loved teaching, learning, movies, reading, and music, embracing life with an open heart and mind. His warmth and dedication to service were exemplified in his active support at the Food Pantry at Grace Memorial Church in Darlington.
A reception and celebration of Richard's life will be held on July 30, 2025, from 2 to 4 pm at Grace Memorial Episcopal Parish Hall, 1022 Main Street, Darlington, MD, where family and friends will gather to celebrate his remarkable journey and the profound impact he made on the lives of those around him.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a scholarship fund set up in his name at Shore Regional School District, 132 Monmouth Park Highway, West Long Branch, NJ 07764. Please note on the check that the donation is to the Burton Scholarship Fund.
