Rufus Zackery, Jr. was born September22. 1944 in Baker County, Georgia to the late Rufus and Lizze Ruth Zackery. He was the first born of ten children of which four brothers preceded him in death, Ville,
Niko, Jerome, and John.
He received his early education in public school in Albany, Georgia and higher education at Sojourner Douglass College in Baltimore, Maryland. While in the military, Rufus attended a wide range of schools for
various skills: US Army Ordnance Center and School for Aircraft Armament Repair, Academy of Health Science for Preventive Medicine Basic and Advance in Fort Sam, Houston, Texas. Some of his military assignments included Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and the Panama Canal Zone. After retiring from the military, he worked for Garrison Command as a Safety Officer in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland for many years.
Rufus loved watching TV. His favorite shows were Westerns, Cheaters, and Naked and Afraid. He was a collector of guns and camels.
Rufus leaves to cherish his memory, his wife for over 60 years, Barbara Jean Tardy Zackery; a son, Wayne Rufus Zackery; daughter, Tammy McNair in Albany, Georgia; grandson, Adam W. Zackery; great
grandson, Zyair Zackery; brothers, William Zackery (Pamela) Albany, Gerogia; Charles Zackery (Lillie) Albany, Georgia; and Mark Zackery (Jackie) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two sisters: Bonnie White (Willie)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Mary Jane Jenkins, Norfolk, Virginia. And a host of nieces and nephews.
