Sarah Silver Sheridan Spencer
Sarah Silver Sheridan Spencer of Parkville, MD passed away at Stella Maris on August 15, 2012. She was 97. Mrs. Spencer was born and raised in Havre de Grace, MD to the late Richard Dallas and Lillian B. (Silver) Sheridan. She was the devoted wife of the late Victor L. Spencer.
Mrs. Spencer was the loving mother to Stephen S. Spencer and his wife Lou Spencer, Susan H. Spencer-Davis and her husband Daniel Davis and Marilyn S. Spencer. She was the adoring grandmother of three and great-grandmother of two. She is survived by her first cousin Helen Bennett Merchant.
Mrs. Sarah S. S. Spencer graduated from Maryland State Normal School of Towson in 1934, where she earned her teaching certificate. In 1943 she received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the Towson State Teacher's College, by 1945 she was appointed teaching principal of Havre de Grace Elementary School. Mrs. Spencer remained in education until 1949, when she decided to resign so that she could be a stay at home mother. She returned to education in 1965 at the Oakington now Roye Williams Elementary School where she remained until her retirement in 1977. She was nominated in 1976 for the Harford County Teacher of the Year award. During her career in education, she served as President of the Harford County Teachers' Association and was a member of the Alpha Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society. Mrs. Sarah S. S. Spencer was inducted into the Harford County Educators Hall of Fame in April 2012.
Mrs. Sarah S. S. Spencer before moving to Oak Crest, was actively involved in The Arc and the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing Bridge. She was a member of the Yacht Club and the Harford Country Club. Mrs. Spencer was a board member of the Lions Club at Oak Crest Village. She enjoyed volunteering and making food for the Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. She enjoyed attending the Towson University Alumni events and singing in the chorus as well as participating in productions of the Village Vaudevillians.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the Oak Crest Village Chapel, 8820 Walther Boulevard, Parkville, MD 21234 from 2 to 3 P.M., where a funeral service will be held at 3 P.M. for Residents and Friends. Officiating will be Pastor Elmer Klein
An additional visitation will be held on Sunday, August 19, 2012 from 2 to 4 P.M. at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 20, 2012 at 11 A.M., at the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, 101 S. Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD, Officiating services will be Pastor Norman Obenshain.
Interment will be held at Rock Run Cemetery.
