Obituary

Shirley Mae Comer, a cherished matriarch and beacon of warmth, passed away
peacefully on May 29, 2025, at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. Born on March 17, 1941,
in Havre de Grace, MD, Shirley's life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and service,
woven with the threads of her unwavering faith and the joy she found in simple
pleasures.

The daughter of the late Jesse and Mary Andrews, Shirley was a proud graduate of
Havre de Grace High School, where she laid the foundations of a life marked by hard
work and perseverance. Her career as a skilled seamstress spanned several factories,
including Bata Shoe, Glen Eagle, and Delta Sewing Factory, where her talents were not
only recognized but also awarded. Shirley's love for sewing and dressmaking was more
than just a profession; it was a form of expression and love that brought beauty into the
lives of those around her.

Shirley's culinary skills were legendary among her loved ones, especially her biscuits
and gravy, which were often proclaimed as the best far and wide. Her fruitcakes were a
testament to her ability to blend tradition with taste, creating memories that lingered long
after the last crumbs were enjoyed. She was a woman of deep faith, a faithful member
of New Beginning Baptist Church, whose life exemplified the virtues she held dear.
Shirley's dedication making girl's dresses donated to Samaritan's Purse "Operation
Christmas Child" was unwavering. She always said, "Every little girl deserves a pretty
dress".
Her involvement with the Red Hat Society showcased her zest for life and her love for
camaraderie.

A woman who carried the essence of her hometown wherever she went, Shirley loved
to reminisce about her roots in Sparta, North Carolina, sharing stories that were as rich
in history as they were in humor. As the well-known saying goes, "If God made the
same mold for all women, there would be no problems," a sentiment that Shirley
embodied through her friendly, faith-filled, and selfless nature.

Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband, William Harry Comer, Jr., her daughter
Martha Ayers, three of her siblings Walter B. Andrews, Rosalee Jones, and Carolien
Stacherski as well as her parents Jesse and Mary Andrews. Her legacy continues
through her children: Walter Lynn Comer (Janice) of Belcamp, MD, Margaret Aldrich
(Roger) of Port Deposit, Aaron Wayne Comer of Port Deposit, and Teresa Mae Bodkin

of Havre de Grace. Shirley's light shines on through her grandchildren James Michael
Ayers III, Michelle Aldrich, Amber Bodkin, Kevin Bodkin, Michael Aldrich, Amie Bodkin,
Amanda Everett, Ashlea Karpinski, and Jeremy Pate; her great-grandchildren Kadin,
Haleigh, Christopher, Makayla, Ava, McKenzie, Jax, Skyler, Aleeah, Adalynn, Tremya,
and Aniyah; and her great-great-grandchild, Willow. She is also survived by her siblings
Dorothy Greene and Johnny Andrews.

As we bid farewell to Shirley, we remember the words of Emily Dickinson, "Unable are
the loved to die, for love is immortality." Shirley's unwavering love for her family, her
friends, and her faith ensures that her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us for
generations to come. Her life was a testament to the beauty of a well-lived life, filled with
grace, generosity, and the joy of giving. Shirley Mae Comer will be deeply missed, yet
