Obituary

Valarie D. Atkinson, a woman whose life was a tapestry woven with love, kindness, and unwavering devotion, passed away peacefully at her home in Aberdeen, Maryland, on May 26, 2026. Born on October 9, 1962, in Galax, Virginia, Valarie's life was a testament to love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and a career dedicated to meticulous excellence.

A proud graduate of Joppatowne High School, Valarie embraced her professional path as a Data Coordinator and Analyst at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where her dedication and precision were quietly respected by those around her. Yet, beyond the confines of her career, it was her heart that truly defined her.

Known to many as a warm and loving soul. Valarie was born to be a loving mother and wife, a calling she fulfilled with radiant grace -she was the heart of her family. Her days were brightened by the simple joys of life. Valarie's joy was magnified by the laughter and light of her grandchildren: Elijah, Everly, and Ellie Nichols. Her life's greatest treasures were found in their smiles, and she delighted in every moment spent by their sides. Her steadfast presence was a beacon of love and comfort to her husband Alfred "Al" Atkinson, her son Michael Todd Nichols and his wife Chelcey, her sister Christine Herbert, and her brother John G. Nichols. She adored her family with an intensity that was palpable; nothing brought her more happiness than gathering her loved ones close, ensuring their well-being, and filling their lives with warmth. The loss of her parents, John D. Nichols and Linda D. (Royal) Nichols, who preceded her in death, was carried tenderly in her heart throughout her life.

Valarie's personality was as distinctive as it was beautiful. She delighted in the simple joys of life, especially her fondness for chickens, roosters, and all things farmhouse-images that reflected her nurturing spirit and grounded nature. Born to be a loving mother and wife, Valarie's care and dedication resonated in everything she did, creating a sanctuary of love wherever she went.

Valarie's passing leaves a silence steeped in love-a silence filled with memories of her gentle kindness, and the unwavering love she gave so freely. She was a guardian of hearts, a nurturer of dreams, and above all, a beloved matriarch whose spirit will forever grace the homes and hearts of those who knew her.

Though she is no longer with us, the memories of Valarie's love and light will continue to guide and inspire her family and friends, comforting them in their grief and reminding them of the profound beauty of a life well-lived. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
