Wayne Herman Phillips, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, at Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, Maryland, surrounded by the love of his children. He was born on May 30, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland, and dedicated his life to his family and career, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Wayne was a successful Mechanical Engineer, contributing his talents to Fidelity Engineering and CB Richard Ellis Inc. He took great pride in his work, embodying a strong work ethic that he instilled in his children. His proudest accomplishments were his family and career, and he took joy in both aspects of his life, creating a legacy of dedication and hard work.
An adventurous spirit, Wayne was deeply involved in the lives of his children, Tara Phillips and her husband James Custer, and Brian Phillips. He cherished every moment he spent with them, often picking up his grandchildren, Garrett Custer and Morgan Custer, to enjoy delightful days filled with laughter and joy. His ability to love and be dedicated to his family was reflected in his everyday actions, consistently ensuring he was a present and integral part of their lives.
Wayne’s personality shone through in various ways, from his caring nature to his adventurous pursuits. An ardent outdoorsman, he found solace in fishing, boating, target shooting and biking, relishing every opportunity to embrace nature. He was a skilled gunsmith, taking pride in making his own shells, and developed a keen interest in collecting knives, attending collector shows with enthusiasm. Gardening was another passion, spending countless hours outdoors, with memorable annual trips to Lancaster, PA to select special plants.
A veteran of the United States National Guard, Wayne served as a dedicated military police officer, demonstrating a commitment to service that paralleled his devotion to his family. During his service he was honorably awarded as a Sharpshooter. Through his military experience and the values, he instilled, he taught his children the importance of commitment and responsibility.
Wayne is survived by his cherished children, Tara Phillips and her husband James Custer, and Brian Phillips, as well as his grandchildren Garrett Custer and Morgan Custer. He also leaves behind the loving memory of his late grandson, Cameron Phillips. His ex-wife and friend, Sue Phillips, remained a solid foundation for their family throughout the years. Additionally, Wayne's sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Karen and Mike Phillips, became treasured family members over time.
In remembering Wayne, we hold dear the memories of his thoughtfulness, unwavering love, and the lasting impact he made in our lives. He taught us the value of presence and connection, building a family tapestry woven with dedication, adventures, and boundless love. As we carry forward his legacy, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with meaningful moments and cherished memories that will endure in our hearts forever.
