William Albert Putland, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on February 21, 2024. He was 99 years old.
Mr. Putland was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Albert Putland and Nancy Nicholson Putland. He was the husband of the late Florence Freed Putland, loving father of Patrice Dixon (Late Spencer Dixon), William Putland (Melissa Kuzma), and Randy Putland (Monica), grandfather of Pace, Brittany, Slater, and Chase Putland, Lane and Randy Dixon, and great-grandfather of Julian and Vivian Putland, Summer, Spencer, and Elizabeth Dixon. He was predeceased by his brother Julian Putland who was killed in World War II.
Mr. Putland left high school to join the Army with his brother to fight in World War II. He lost his brother in the war and was awarded 3 Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. Following his service he finished high school. He retired from Perry Point VAMC as Acting Chief of Staff.
Mr. Putland was one of the founding members of the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum. He was a Master Model Boat Builder and has his work on display at the Maritime Museum. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Skipjack Martha Lewis. Mr. Putland also volunteered at Elk Neck State Park. He enjoyed sailing and boating and was a skilled botanist.
