William Lee Wettig, Sr., 96 years, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on June 21, 2024.
Mr. Bill Wettig was born to William Marshall Wettig and Elma Courtney Wettig of Market Street on August 17, 1927. After graduating from Havre de Grace High School, Bill began serving his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force enlisting during the Second World War in 1944. Upon being honorably discharged from the military at the end of the war, he continued his career as a government servant working at Edgewood Arsenal as a budget analyst.
Bill had a deep connection to his community, serving as a member of the Havre de Grace Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 47; a choir member and lector at St. Patrick's Catholic Church; and a coach for the Havre de Grace Little League. He also spent countless hours volunteering alongside his wife and coordinator of Grace Place, Mary Wettig.
A lover of nature, Bill could often be found outdoors boating on the Chesapeake Bay, gardening, bird-watching, and leading his Boy Scouts troop. As a proud Marylander and an avid sports fan, he never missed a Baltimore Orioles or Ravens game.
Bill kept his family at the center of his life. A devoted husband of 69 years to the late Mary Ann Wettig, he was the loving father of William "Woody" Lee Wettig, Jr., Jane Wettig, Mark Wettig (Janet Wettig), Patricia Head (Jack Head), and Michael Wettig (Jill Wettig), grandfather of Mary Jane Tarbert, William Tarbert, Teresa Figueiredo, Kelly Elliott, Jason Wettig, Katelyn Grandy, and Jeremy Wettig, and great-grandfather of Chance Hardy and Jude Wettig. He was predeceased by his six siblings. His family will be forever grateful for his lessons about life, gardening, house projects, and commitment.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, from 1-2 PM at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A. 927 Pulaski Highway, Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Grace Place, P.O. Box 371, Havre de Grace, MD, 21078, or Habitat for Humanity, 205 South Hays Street, Bel Air, MD 21014.
