Betty Ann Mentzer Hutchison

Betty Ann Mentzer Hutchison died suddenly of heart failure, at her home in Silver Spring, Maryland, on September 3, 2012. She was 86.
Mrs. Hutchison was born in Elk Neck, MD. She was a graduate of Havre de Grace High School. She was the wife of Robert W. W. Hutchison of Summit, New Jersey, whom she came to know through attendance at the Young People’s Group of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, Young People’s Sunday Meeting. She was 16 and Robert was 20 and awaiting his World War II call to active service from the United States Navy/ Coast Guard. After his discharge from the service, Mr. Hutchison accepted an appointment from Princeton University, and the couple lived there until he graduated. Following graduation, the couple lived in Havre de Grace, MD, while Mr. Hutchison was employed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, and where their 3 sons, Christian, Kim, and Dana were born. While at Princeton, NJ Betty was employed at the George Gallup Audience Research Group. During World War II,
Mrs. Hutchison had also been employed by the Edgewood Arsenal and the Aberdeen Proving Ground as a typist. Following her husband’s Personnel Officer assignment at White Sands Missile Range, Mrs. Hutchison returned to the East, at the Army Ordnance Personnel Office at the Pentagon from which the family moved to Silver Spring and Mr. Hutchison was honored by assignment as one of the Founding Officers of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. Betty Ann became Executive Assistant to several Principals for the Montgomery County Middle School System. She also enjoyed teaching young church students during the summer.
Everyone knew her as a loving mother and grandmother and deeply loved her husband. She impressed all as a kind, generous, helpful person.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 3 to 5 PM at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD

A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 1 PM at the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, 101 S. Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD.

Officiating will be Pastor Norman Obenshain.
Interment will be held at Angel Hill Cemetery.
