Obituary for Elizabeth E. "Betty" Coakley

Elizabeth “Betty” Eugenia Endslow Coakley, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2014, following a prolonged illness at Citizens Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Havre de Grace, MD. Betty was born in Baltimore, MD, on May 29, 1933, to Joseph Stroup Endslow and Katherine Archer Endslow. She was the wife of the late James R. Coakley and the beloved mother to Michele Kimberley Jessup, Lewes, DE, Carole Coakley Schaub, Bel Air, MD, Jennifer Archer Poling, Fairfield, CT, and Stephany North Coakley, Raleigh, NC, each of whom survive her. She was the loving grandmother to Katherine Jessup, Matthew Jessup, Andrew Poling, Sarah Poling, Amelia Poling, Miguel Magallanes, and Fiona Magallanes. She is also survived by her sister Katherine Pickett, Bel Air, MD, and her brother-in-law William Pickett, as well as many nieces and nephews. Betty graduated from Bel Air High School in 1951, and attended the University of Maryland at College Park. She enjoyed her work in Maryland and Virginia as an elementary school teacher and later in Maryland and North Carolina as a real estate agent. More recently, she found great satisfaction in public service endeavors, including her election to the Havre de Grace City Council, serving from 1999 to 2001, and her service on the Democratic Central Committee, the City of Havre de Grace Ethics Commission, the Parks and Harbor Commission, the Community Activities Panel, and the Health Care Panel. Betty’s family will remember her as a wonderful cook, an incredible seamstress who created fabulous Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, an adept musician who loved music and played the marimba, and a great organizer who loved to take on a multitude of projects. She organized family moves from Maryland to Fairfax, VA, Portland, OR, Westport, CT and Raleigh, NC. In her retirement she returned to her roots in Maryland in 1995. She approached all of the opportunities and challenges of life with a positive attitude and a can-do mentality.A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 10 AM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A. Pastor Norman Obenshain of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow immediately at Union Chapel Cemetery, Joppa, MD. Contributions in Betty’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8219 Town Center Drive, Baltimore, MD 21236.
