Obituary for Gilbert "Gil" Bowers

Gilbert Aloysius “Gil” Bowers, 82, of Aberdeen, MD, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2016 at Gilchrist Center Hospice in Towson, MD.
Gil was born in Chase, Maryland to Milton Joseph Bowers and Mary Catherine Strehlen Bowers. The youngest of 7 children, Gil grew up on farms near the Chesapeake Bay where he acquired a life-long enthusiasm for hunting, fishing and crabbing.
Gil graduated from Aberdeen High School and then served as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army. After his military service, Gil worked briefly at the Bata Shoe Company and then took a position with the Department of the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, ultimately working for the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL). Working during the day and taking classes at night, Gil earned an A.A from Harford Community College and a B.S. in Mathematics from Towson State University.
In 1957 Gil married Barbara Alice “Bobbie” Anders, of Independence, VA. Together for 57 years until her death, they raised two sons, Ronald Bowers of Darlington, MD and Steve Bowers of Havre de Grace, MD. For the last 42 of those years, Gil and Bobbie lived in a house he built in Aberdeen.
Gil spent his life helping others. Whether it was taking care of Bobbie during her illness, protecting our soldiers through his work at the Ballistic Research Laboratory, or helping someone do a home repair they didn’t know how to do, Gil was there to help. Gil’s homebuilding skills were so extensive that he also helped build houses for both his sons as well as his brother Albert.
Gil is survived by his sons Ronald and Steve, daughters-in-law Christine and Mary Lynn, granddaughter Yana and grandsons Val and Nickolas. Gil is also survived by his sister Marie Alexander of Abingdon, MD and his brother Albert Bowers of Havre de Grace, MD. His brothers Milton, Bernard, and Leonard and sister Bertha preceded Gil in death.
Viewings will be held on Friday, January 29 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 30 at 11 am St. Joan of Arc Church, 222 South Law Street, Aberdeen MD, with the burial immediately following at Harford Memorial Gardens. Father William Franken will officiate.
Contributions may be made in Gil’s memory to St. Joan of Arc Church, 222 South Law Street, Aberdeen MD, 21001.
