Obituary for Jane Josephine Conlisk (Schrauder)

Jane Josephine Conlisk (Schrauder)
Jane Josephine Schrauder Conlisk passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 8, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was 89.

Mrs. Conlisk was the daughter of George John Schrauder and Cecilia Rothdow Schrauder and was born and raised in Monroe, MI. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Marygrove College in Detroit in 1947. Jane married John Robert Conlisk in 1948, who, in his words, “was struck by a thunderbolt” upon meeting her and “grew more in love each day.” They moved to Darlington, MD in 1952 where they raised six children. She was employed by the Department of Social Services in South Bend and in Baltimore during the 1940’s and retired in 1986 from the Equitable Trust Company after 18 years of service at the Darlington branch.

Mrs. Conlisk was an active member of the Darlington community for over 60 years. She was an officer of the Darlington Recreation Council, Darlington Community Council, Darlington Fire Company Ladies’ Auxiliary, Harford Memorial Auxiliary, Darlington Lion’s Club, and the Tommy Kelly Fund. She also served on various holiday committees, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and provided transportation for F.I.S.H. clients. After her infant daughter died of heart disease in 1954, she chaired the local fund drive for the American Heart Association, organizing “Heart Sunday” for more than four decades. She also contributed to the community in many informal ways, welcoming new residents with fresh-baked goods, picking up trash on her morning walks, and providing rides, meals and friendship to many elderly residents. She enjoyed the challenge and companionship of a good game of bridge, and knew how to bake a good pie, twice winning “Best Apple Pie” at the Darlington Apple Festival. A natural athlete, she loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports and cheering for all teams Notre Dame. For her volunteer work, she was named Darlington’s “Apple of Our Eye” in 1989, one of Maryland’s “Most Beautiful People” in 1990, and “Woman of the Year” by the Havre de Grace Soroptimist Club. But most of all, she is remembered for her compassion, generosity and profound respect for others. She saw the good in all people.

Mrs. Conlisk is survived by her children, John R. Conlisk, Jr., and Mary Conlisk of Valparaiso, IN, Patrick William Conlisk of Mariposa, CA, Elizabeth Conlisk and Mary Stuart of Whately, MA and Georgette and Jack Mester, Mary Jane “M.J.” and W. She was the sister of Cecilia Rehe of Royal Oak, MI, and the late George Schrauder and Elizabeth Mehler. She was predeceased by her husband John in 2009, her daughter Kathleen in 1954, and her grandson Tucker Carr in 2005.
