Obituary for John Norris Jessup
John N. Jessup
Mr. John N. Jessup passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 1, 2009, at his home in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He was 81.
Mr. Jessup was born in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Dr. Parke M. and Pauline (Norris) Jessup. He was a devoted husband of 61 years to Ruth (Weber) Jessup.
He was a loving father to the Rev. Jennifer E. Cibelli of Alta Loma, CA, Martha J. MacFarland and her husband Robert A. of Scaggsville, MD and Ann W. Finn and her husband Robert F. of Pitman, NJ. He was the proud grandfather to Kristen L. Cibelli, Lindsay N. Hamilton and her husband Gregory B. of Berkeley, CA, Megan M. McGuigan and her husband Matthew T. of Raleigh, NC, Kaitlin E. MacFarland and Brian A. MacFarland of Scaggsville, MD, Sean M. Finn of Brooklyn, NY, Abigail C. Finn and Daniel C. Finn of Pitman, NJ. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Skinner of Northridge, CA.
Mr. Jessup was raised in Muscatine, Iowa. After graduating high school, he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He later received his master’s degree from the University of Iowa where he belonged to the Sigma XI and Alpha Chi Sigma fraternities. His work as a Chemist for FMC Corporation for nearly 40 years took him to Charleston, WV, Baltimore, MD, and Princeton NJ. Mr. and Mrs. Jessup retired to Havre de Grace in 1992.
Mr. Jessup was an avid reader with a keen interest in photography. He maintained a lifelong love of learning, often researching topics in history, biography and science. He was a skilled woodworker and built handcrafted furniture for family and friends. He also worked on special projects for church and decoy carving. He was a member of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church and a member of Friends of the Havre de Grace Public Library, Friends of the Concord Point Lighthouse, and the Young at Heart Club.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the Zellman Funeral Home, PA., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 3:30 PM at the Funeral Home. The memorial service will be followed by a reception to be held at the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church Social Hall (101 Union Ave., Havre de Grace, MD 21078).
Officiating the service will be the Reverend Dr. Ray Roberson.
