Margaret Louise Bates Pickard



Margaret Louise Bates Pickard of Havre de Grace, Maryland, died at the age of 95, on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, Havre de Grace, Maryland. She was born on August 31, 1913, in Merrill, Maine to the Late Everard L. Bates and Winnifred G. (Cunningham) Bates. She grew up on the family farm in Moro Plantation and was educated in the BatesvilleSchool and at the PattenAcademy from which she graduated in 1931. Margaret then trained to be a nurse a HahnemannHospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, from which she graduated in 1934.

While living with her family in Dunstable, Massachusetts, she met Cyrus W. Pickard and they married on April 28, 1937, in Nashua, New Hampshire. They lived in South Acton, Massachusetts, Moro Plantation, Maine, and Hingham, Massachusetts, before settling in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in 1948. Mrs. Pickard worked as a homemaker and later went back to nursing. She worked in various nursing homes before accepting employment in the clinic and hospital at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Bridgewater, where she worked primarily with patients addicted to alcohol and drugs. She especially enjoyed assisting doctors in the operating room, was an excellent nurse, and was much appreciated by staff and patients alike. She retired in 1975.

In 1979, Mrs. Pickard moved with her husband to HarfordCounty in order to be closer to their son and his family. The couple lived in Aberdeen for eight years and then moved to Darlington in 1987. Her husband of 53 years died in 1990. Her two sisters, Edith N. Holland of Southborough, Massachusetts, Eloise B. Shean of North Haven, Connecticut and her daughter-in-law Janine M. Pickard of Darlington also predeceased her. She is survived by her son, James E. Pickard and her daughter-in-law, Patricia B. Pickard of Havre de Grace, two granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Pickard of University City, Missouri, Rebecca F. Pickard of Baltimore, a grandson-in-law Kurt A. Thoroughman and Two great-granddaughters, Phoebe Janine Pickard Thoroughman and Lydia Margaret Pickard Thoroughman of University City. She is also survived by her two step-grandsons John O’Connell and his wife Ciara of County Wicklow, Ireland and Finnbarr O’Connell and his wife Anita of Dublin, Ireland, one step- granddaughter Sinead Dowd and her husband James of Chevy Chase, Maryland and five step-great grandchildren, Sabine Marie, Tadhg Patrick, Finnbarr Garrett O’Connell of County Wicklow, Ireland and Amy Elizabeth and Lucy Anne O’Connell of Dublin, Ireland. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Pickard was an active member of the Golden Age Club in Aberdeen and a faithful member of the Deer Creek Friends Meeting in Darlington. She enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting. She loved watching British comedies on television and doing crossword puzzles. Most of all, however, she enjoyed the company of her family and friends.

Calling hours are at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 South Washington Street, Havre de Grace, Maryland from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM on Tuesday, April 14, 2009.

Under the care of Henry S. Hollaway and the committee of ministry and oversight a Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 4 PM at the Deer Creek Friends Meeting in Darlington after the manner of Friends.

A burial will be private.
