Ronald Lee Simmons

Ronald Lee Simmons, of Havre de Grace, MD, died peacefully at home on March 29, 2008. He was 77.

He was the beloved husband of 53 years of Dorothy Jean Simmons of Havre de Grace, MD. He was the loving father of Brian Simmons and his wife Karen of Forest Hill, MD, Richard Simmons and his wife Cindy Stevenson of Bel Air, MD, Douglas Simmons and his wife Stephanie of Baltimore, MD, and Barbara Tyler and her husband Clark of McLean, Virginia. He was a devoted grandfather of eight; Stephanie Simmons of Boston, Mass., Grant, Wade and Taylor Simmons all of Forest Hill, MD, Andrew and Neil Simmons both of Bel Air, MD, Lauren and Devin Simmons both of Baltimore, MD. He is survived by his brother and sisters; Dewey Simmons of Berlin, MD, Doris Pennington of Bel Air, MD, Avis Blakely of Doylestown, PA, Audrey Hawks and her husband James of Churchville, MD, Joyce Amoss and her husband Don of Quakertown, PA and Charlotte Ann Harris and her husband Laurence of Bel Air, MD. He is survived by his loving sister-in-law Anne Simmons of Annapolis, MD.

Mr. Simmons was employed by the United States Department of the Army for 32 years. He retired in 1986 from the United States Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity as chief of the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Durability Division. He was a member of the US Department of the Army’s Senior Executive Service.

A graduate of Havre de Grace High School and St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, he was a lifelong Harford County resident with a heart for the world. He received honors for decades of community service with FISH, Meals on Wheels, Grace Place and many other programs. A favorite pastime in recent years was showing visitors through the SusquehannaMuseum at the Lockhouse. Children especially liked the pivot bridge.

Mr. Simmons had been a member for almost 60 years of the Webster Congregational Christian Church, where he sang in the choir, was a Director of the Sunday School Department and served on many church boards. More recently he was an active member of the HopewellUnitedMethodistChurch, where he also sang in the choir and contributed his many talents wherever needed.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, April 2 at HopewellChurch in Level, MD. Following services a reception will be held at the Level Volunteer Fire Hall, Level Road. Burial will be at DeerCreekUnitedMethodistChurchCemetery, 2729 Chestnut Hill Road, Forest Hill, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to Hopewell United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3602 Level Village Road, Havre de Grace, MD21078.
